Canyon,

Not sure where you are located or where hunts are allowed, but I just returned from a cross country trip along I-40 from NC to Cali. We hit a detour up AZ 64/AZ 180 and back. We saw two herds. One definitely had a bull in it due to his dark and large neck, I think I saw some antelope off in the distance as well. One heard was east of the road and on the way south the other was on the west side but closer to the park entrance.

Dead coyotes all over the place that were hit by cars.

Az just looks like Elk and wildlife.

I already want to go back.

Bud B thats not the hunt unit Russ has but I know that area well as I spent 16 years patrolling it and still call it home.

Guys this all reflects on Dave Johnson...he really is that kind of guy...

This community is full of super people and we see great stuff all the time, but even still some people really stand out as awesome and Dave is one of those guys...

If you dont own a Dave Johnson cedar longbow...you should.

I've heard tradgangers talk about certain bows that just seemed part of them and now I know exactly what that's about....this bow feels like part of my soul......every time I shoot it.

Now if I can just get those single bevel Tuskers sharp.........

Russ, after dealing with Dave when getting a bow from him,I could not agree more! He is a gentleman, listens to you, works with you, and is one very skilled bowyer/ artisan.

Excellent story! Thanks for sharing it with us.

Good luck on the hunt.

Got the arrows in!   Wow!

These are really old....and most of them are still straight......after sitting on a shelf for 25 years........

Way too bad we can't get these anymore....

Can't wait to refletch 'em and shoot......

Thanks Dave!

Sitting here remembering my best friend and reading this thread brought his voice back to life. This weekend I visited his widow and daughter in Texas. Both of us being in dangerous professions made a promise to each other to watch over the others family should the Lord decide it was time one of us should go. I had posted back when Russ left this world about his journey in Traditional Archery and the friends he found here. Since that time his Dave Johnson Longbow has been in my care with the intent to sell it for his widow. Just haven't had the heart and even though I will never be able to draw this bow I have pulled it out every now and then. As I handle it I contemplate whether it should sit or be sold and have it do what it was intended to do. I know what Russ would say. I just can't see letting it go unless I know it will go on many adventures.

What a great story and thanks for reposting it.  Dave Johnson is what all archers should strive to be.  Hope he's doing well.  He sent me a post on one of the archery sites a year or two ago.  Hope he sees this!
