These are pictures of the Paint Mines located near Calhan, Co. They are on open space to be used by the public. These colored sand stones were mined by the Native Americans to use as pigments and dyes for coloring various items and traded to other tribes for goods needed. Thought you might enjoy!!

Beautiful....how's the mule deer hunting in the area?
In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities. In the expert's there are few...So the most difficult thing is always to keep your beginner's mind...This is also the real secret of the arts: always be a beginner.  Shunryu Suzuki

Thanks! Glad you guys liked it! In the areas surrounding I am sure there are some good mulie areas but it is all private and good luck trying to get on. This place in particular is controlled by the parks division so no hunting. There is one outcropping that looks like a huge stack of tires but is pure black sandstone, very cool( sorry no pics of that). This area makes me think of how easy we have it. The Natives would defend secrets like these with their lives because it made such a valued trade item. And think to be some of the other tribes only getting access to this stuff on a limited trade. Bet people like Mike Yancey would love to be able to use some of this stuff! Pictures don't do it justice (as always).

Geezer

I've heard about the place from friends but have never had an opportunity to visit it.  Thanks for sharing those pictures - now I know that place is real!
