4 fletch: how to

what is the best way to four fletch an arrow? I use a bitzenburger and have done several dozen arrows in four fletch but they never seem to last very long before the feathers become worn. Is there a different pattern to use other than 75 and 90 degrees? Thanks.

Set your Bitz for three fletch. Fletch the cock feather, index and add a hen, remove the arrow and flip it over (around the nock) 180 degrees, add another hen, index back and finish with the last feather. This will give you 60x120 and the most clearance. Works great.

1. Set jig as you would for three fletch and add cock feather.
2. Turn the index to the left and add a hen feather.
3. Remove the shaft completely from the jig and turn the index back to the right, which is the position it was in when you added the first cock feather.
4. Now insert the shaft 180 degrees. The feathers you have already added will be opposite the clamp.
5. Add another cock feather.
6. Turn index to the left again and add the final hen feather.
I'm using the term cock and hen feather just to identify the position of the index. Hope that helps break it down a little better.
