I've been hunting for quite a few years and one of the things I have never been able to figure out is: When is the right time of the season to use grunt calls, doe bleats, fawn calls, rattleing horns? I have pretty much everything of what I listed but have stopped using any of those things because I feel that using them during the wrong time of season I'd wind up spooking deer.Kind of turned myself into a silent hole in the woods. But if I knew when to use them maybe I could be a little better hunter.

I have personally called in bucks and killed them from the 1st week in Oct up through mid Dec.

I really like to use a combination of the "Can" and a grunt tube. It has worked fantastic for me over the years!

I have rattled in a few, but the can/grunt is what really works for me the best.

Fawn bleats work great for doe hunting early season best for me. Like everything though, try it & see what works for you. Being quiet is not a bad thing either. Deer are deer & some will react positively & some will take off. Good luck and try what seems right.

larry be aware that in jersey--you go tootin a fawn bleat -you'll probably be stampeded by bears!!i usually have the "most"positive results w/grunt tubes starting around halloween--the can will work !!use both--you gotta believe!!the short answer to your question is start calling now---good luck

Thank Mike. I already have seen 2 bears this season. One was a big boy but he was a good one since he ran away and didn't try coming after me.I'm still not gonna start carrying one of those " hunter orange rape whistles" around when I hit the woods. LOL

there is a good articel in TradArchers' World about calling.... check it out.

but the chase."

Running Buck

I hunt some of the most bear populated areas in Jersey and never had a issue with calling.( I wish I could say the same for snaring coyotes!) The "can calls" do work and like it has already been said, it seems there is never a too early or late in the season time to call. You can change the tone of the cans by cupping your hand over the end of the can to produce a deeper sound. Grunt calls can and do send small bucks packing depending on how many times they had there butt kicked, like anything it pays to experiment.

You can read about some suggestions I have for changing your calling techniques as the season progresses in the free reading section of our website  www.brothersofthebow.com.

I hope it will give you some ideas when to call. As bowhunters, we are taught to be stealthy and quiet. I think this works best overall, but I do find it hard not to try to lure an unsuspecting buck in closer with horns, doe bleats, wheeze call, or grunt tubes. Mike

Very good article Mike. Thanks.
