Customizing Bow Tips

Felix (cacciatore) was kind enough to send me some green tip Bear limbs that I have been searching for.
The finish was in bad shape so I decided to strip em and give them a fresh coat.

While in the process I decided to make them my own by customizing the tips. Easily done with a flat file, some round files, sandpaper and patience.
The only advice I would suggest is to go SLOW. Stop often and LOOK. Pay special attention to string grooves.
Before spraying on the finish I will do final sanding to smooth all the edges. I like to use the sponge/sanding blocks at this point. Hey, if I could do it...Anyone could!

This really is quite easy folks. Just take your time.
Bear archery left quite alot of "tip" on their limbs which is great for modifications like this.
I would not do this to a mint or rare set of limbs but if you have a set that's in need of a restoration.....Go for it.
I did the final sanding and contours. Ready for varnish.......Philip

How did you strip off the finish?

Removing the finish on limbs is no joke!
We face the HORROR of removing fiberglass which obviously lessens draw weight.
I use a weak stripper where I could get away with it. You dont want the stripper to reach the fiberglass. This is most important.
Then I "scrape" the finish where I could and the rest is done by sandpaper. Make every effort to not remove glass (although you will remove some).
NEVER DIG INTO THE GLASS! The only glass removed will happen with your sanding. (unavoidable).

It would be great if the set your working on is a bit too heavy for you. This gives you some room to drop weight in the limbs (and they will) and get them close to where you like them.

My limbs were marked 55# @28".
They are NOW 55# @ 29". This was not my intention.
The limbs finish was terrible and lots of finish was gone completely in the working part of the limb. I should have scaled them BEFORE I stripped and refinished them. This would have told me exactly how much weight was lost in the process.
Also and very important. Stay away from removing sides of limbs (width). This will remove weight dramatically!
