Too cool Highcountry, thanks for posting.  The old guy (Grizz, my Dad) is quite the mentor and an artist, especially when it comes to building bows.  We each managed to arrow an elk (mine was of the no-antler type) and a bear (that's me in the pic above).  He built me a new bow this summer and I was anxious to put it to use-- two arrows and two animals; can't beat that!  I can't wait until javelina season and to start the next chapter...

Hello VIG, I thought you were out of the country traveling at the speed of sound? Yup, your Pop is one in a trillion. I can't wait to go up there and see him. I still attempt to make arrows as beautiful as his but still not close. You take care of yourself & crew.

So, are those Colorado bears and elk?  How bout that avatar buffalo?  What's the story on all of them?!?

highcountry

Okay Boys, Steve O's questions are all yours!   :readit:  I am just here to stir the pot. Grizz is a little shy, we might have to poke at him a bit.

Thanks guys, the avatar is from Oklahoma 2005, the rest came from colorado this fall, public land, rough to get into, within a few miles from home for me.A very low density area for sure, I saw 5 elk in 16 days, but I won't say how many bears! You can hear them at night "exploring" around camp, leaving their calling card as proof. Yes it is exciting.

wow those are impressive bear.  Any details on their size?  I ask as I and my wife are heading to Alberta in the spring to try for a monster black bear.

As far as the bears go, we had to quarter both for hauling, and after a week in the cooler Joes bear quarters were still over 200 pounds total. Mine didn't get weighed. The head and hide (green) made for one load. Both bears were taken with Grizzly Longbows, I used doug fir shaft and a wensel BH. Joe used an aluminum shaft 2117, and one of Blake Fischers heads, 2 blade. Both were very effective combinations.

Congrats Mike! Looks like more material for another book!
What is man without the beasts? If all the beasts were gone, men would die from great loneliness of spirit, for whatever happens to the beasts also happens to man. All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the children of the earth
