We first hunted Cache Valley UT 2 years ago with the PBS Youth Hunt; if you have a young son or daughter, or niece or nephew, sister or brother, teen age neighbor-you get the idea-join the PBS and find out about the Youth Hunt. Adam loved it and I did too.

Here we are a few miles from camp

A beautiful mixture of forests, mountains, waterholes-just the kind of place you would pick if you were an Elk or hunter.

Bjorn

On the evening of the UT archery opener I was sitting in a ground blind overlooking some mud and a bit of water when in the woods above me I heard a group of animals coming in fast. I stepped out to get behind a bush and into a better position with an arrow nocked. Three cows appeared, two of them ran about and the third one stopped right on the other side of the bush which was my cover and literally about eight feet away................I came to full draw and shot her through the light bush. My arrow sunk deep into the lower part of her exposed chest just behind the front leg, and they were gone! A second later there was a huge crash in the thick woods nearby and I knew she was down!

She ran about 25 yards, the arrow went right through her heart.

Adam hunted on a waterhole about a mile into the brush that had been scouted out prior to our arrival by Craig Burris who has hunted Cache Valley for 30 years and was a guide on the PBS Youth Hunt.
The water was visited by Elk-cows and bulls daily as well as moose and deer coming in for a drink, or just to tease and entertain hunters regularly.
Adam was fortunate enough to draw a Bull tag for this hunt, so shooting a cow was not an option and he was prepared to wait for the perfect shot opportunity when his bull came in.

WAY TO GO!

Congrats to both you and Adam, Bjorn!

That is some *fine* dining right there!

Enjoy!

Shoot straight, Shinken

So now we come to the climax of our Utah hunt! It is Tuesday, day four and Adam has been in his stand daily from 5 AM till ten, and 5 PM till dark admiring animals coming to the water hole and waiting for his bull and his shot opportunity to present themselves, and at about 8 AM a beautiful 5 point comes to water and sinks his nose down for a long drink............he is about 18 yards from 17 year old Adam's stand.............the Hunter comes to full draw as he has done many times before and aims his arrow at a spot just behind the front leg and slightly high to allow for the angle for the elevated stand.
The Elk makes his last run for cover and vanishes into the woods.
The blood trail is excellent-lots everywhere

and blissfully short

Bjorn

A few yards and minutes later we find our prize

Adam and Craig; assignment almost completed

And now the real work begins in earnest. Adam bent over working on his first Elk.

Again, expert help from hunters in camp. Everyone is so willing to help field dress and pack out the animals.
Fortunately I had the opportunity to help other hunters with their Elk too.
