I used to live right across the river from you Aaron near Troy and Old Monroe, Mo.
Those river bottoms up there are chocked full of morels! There are guys who literally load the john boat with them every year.

I went this evening and found 10 of the early caps. No morels yet it has been a cold spring.

Southwest Ohio (North East/South East Butler County) has been producing hundreds of Snakeheads as well as a few handfuls of grays.  Little later side of things in this part of the country.

Smoke, that picture is incredible. I sent a copy to my wife and I have it as my background. Hope that's ok.

Thanks and no problem using it. That particular morel was only an inch tall and the first I found last year. Laid the camera on the ground to get the shot.

I had a fun day Saturday. Went turkey hunting with no luck but ended up finding these. I had a nice walk with some reward for it.

Charlie did you get the big ones in New York ??????
Yes Ron, Found them By New Paltz.  You would hate me but we sold the big ones to  a restaurant who had VIP guests. He stuffed them individually and served them to the customers.  we knew Sam, the proprietor of the restaurant and these mushrooms paid for our fishing trip the following day and we received a free meal off his menu.

Not to worry we had 5 more pounds we enjoyed ourselves. Sometimes when you get that many our only option would be dry them out or eat them up. at the time I didn't have a good drying method so we ate to our hearts content and made a few bucks also.

Nothing wrong with financing some outdoor fun or paying for a meal with the barter system     I still can't believe that I have never seen them in the woods. I'll try again this week!

First ones always the hardest Ron, I just peeked at a mushroom hunting Forum,

They have found some in Columbia County and in Westchester CO. Plus a few over the border in Connecticut,  I think they will be here in a week or so.

Temps have been a tad on the cool side but close and rain conditions have been not only right, they have been perfect.

Thanks for all the great Morel info ! Here's my recipe :

First - you have to find them
Second - trim the bottom of the stem if there's any brown on it and cut them in half length wise
Third - soak them in salt water for about an hour while stirring from time to time
Fourth - lay them on paper towels and dry them off
Fifth - roll them in flour and fry on medium heat in butter till there crispy brown . Add salt and pepper to taste and enjoy with deer steak or fresh wild turkey breast !!

I pretty much do mine the same way, but I run mine through an egg wash bath first. It's just a couple eggs beaten with a splash of milk to thin the eggs down a little bit. Then roll in seasoned flour and either deep fry in a fry daddy or put a inch or two of oil in a large skillet and pan fry. If I have turkey breast it gets prepared the same way, add a skillet full of fried taters or home made french fries and its Game On!!          :goldtooth:

I found 128 in Pike County Illinois this weekend in about 3 hours of looking.

hardwaymike

Haven't found any here yet, but by this weekend they should be popping up. The weather has been horrible this spring. But this week it is supposed to rain almost everyday then warm up Friday and Saturday. So while we are out trout fishing on opening day I will have to go looking for some more "crawlers"! LOL

Believe it or not the "HARDWAY" is often the EASIER way(in hindsight)!
