Last Minute Buck

Have had a strange season with a couple of uncharateristic misses and lost my best buck ever in a monster swamp I hunt around.  I had been seeing multiple bucks from spikes to 8pts every time out but wanted a big one.  Last night I decided to take the next racked buck opportunity because rifle season starts Monday and the red coat army makes buck hunting tough in Michigan with a bow in December.  I knew this would be my last real evening of hunting undisturbed deer for 2010.  At 4:30 this fella walks out and gives me a 20yard shot quartering away and I was fortunate enough to make good.  I then look at my phone to check the weather and see there is a 40% chance of rain.  Stuggling with what to do it starts spitting at about 5pm and so I climb down to see what the sign looks like.  Good news - imediate blood and lots of it with a football size pile of red foam.  I decide to try and find him right then and not risk the rain.  About 40 yards into the swamp, following great blood, I bump a deer that charges deeper into the suck hole.  Dog gone, I cannot believe this buck is still alive and really cannot believe I was so impatient!!!  Back out quietly and risk the rain.  After a tough night I discover it did rain but very little.  I get back into the same tree and wait for thie lights to come on.  Planned to sit until 8am but by 7:30 I could not take it anymore.  I go back to the original blood and it is almost gone, argggg - I am getting worried but head to the last spot of blood.  There is a little blood left to track but not much and another 20 yards in I find a jelly ball of blood in his bed where I must have pushed him last night.  After the bed I start looking in the direction I heard the deer run and cannot find anything.  After a couple hours of grid searching in the direction of travel where I place a small piece of TP every 10 yards or so to know where I had been I go back to the last blood.  Totally frustrated and loosing faith I start going in the oposite direction I had been looking and whola, there he is, stone dead!  I was 10' from him many times and he was dead before I got out of my tree.  Must have been another deer that blew outa there last night.  I was so grateful.  thanks for listening.
By the way - I got to try out my new Boker carbon trapper I traded a dozen arrows for with another Tradganger.  Worked well!

Way to stick with the trailing, know sometimes it is frustrating but when you find the pot of gold at the end it is worth. Good job.
The essence of the hunt for me is to enter nature and observe+ return safely occasionally with the gift of a life taken.

Nice buck! Way to stay with it. I doubt I would have had the patience that you did on the evening you shot him, with it spittin' rain and all. Good job.

funny thing is that if the other deer did not spook out of there I would have kept tracking and found him in another couple minutes last night but I had no idea he was so close and DEAD!
