I use a pair of leggings and shirt that is designed for cross country skiing. It is windproof and warm and makes a perfect base layer under my wool pants, shirt and vest.

take a look at your local rei.   www.rei.com

best stuff and the warranty is unbeatable.

BTW

I have a light weight windproof vest from Patagonia I will wear under my jacket. Stopping the wind from going through your clothing is probably the most overlooked option for many hunters, to staying warm... IMO.

ksbowman, yes, the silk will really slow down the wind and keep the heat trapped in the base layer. I have been using a light weight merino wool base layer and a Micro-tex shirt for an outer layer. I add the silk over the merino wool when needed. I can add a heavier weight merino wool shirt over or under the silk, depending on the conditions, when it gets worse. Recently I added a sweater weight synthetic down insulated top to replace the heavier wool top in real tough conditions. I use this system as we can have huge temprature swings in a short amount of time. I can easily carry all this and the rest of my day needs in a 1200 cubic inch pack. Works for me anyway.

Cabelas sells some polartec expedition weight power dry (lots of names for this stuff I guess) that is fantastic and on sale right now, without a doubt one of the best items I have that really help me to stay warm.

WOOL IS GREAT--- BUT TOO STOP THE WIND-- TRY A LIGHT DOWN SHIRT---   UNDER YOUR WOOL---

I recommend a wind proof fleece vest. I don't like extra layers on my arms when I hunt.
Its light and works.

I wear this one. Nothing fancy. Others offer cheaper suggestions... wait for it to go on sale if you can.

I just noticed on Fred Asbells site under wool pullovers that they now are offering a wind blocker vest.

If you want to save some money, the old "blast jackets" are at most good will stores for cheep. They don't make much noise if they are surrounded by fleece or wool.  As windy as it has been around here they come with handy large belly pockets.  Before you go out on one of those sixty plus gusting days remember to first tie down gram-ma and put rocks in your pockets.

After posting the original message to this thread I got my hands on one of Teresa Asbell's windproof vests and is it ever wonderful.

I was actually walking from my house to deer hunt on a really windy day when I found it in the mailbox. I put it on and saw a huge difference with the wind not cutting through my KOM pullover getting to me.

Being a police officer the UA is great warmth for high activity (softball, SWAT training, or under my bullet proof vest), but sitting still and keeping the wind off me it does not do. This fleece fits EXACTLY what I was looking for...it's thin, I don't have to buy a new wardrobe of windproof garments, and can use it as the weather dictates.

Tried various "windstop" stuff in the past and most was noisy (including the stuff in most sweaters).  I did some checking the last few years and Predator company told me that they use two barriers in theirs and it was quiet. I purchased a Predator Fleece Jacket last year here on tradgang.  So far, it is the best I have ever used- both quiet and blocks wind. Zero noise!  May not be a good layer item under KOM- but it rocks.

Bears can attack people- although fewer people have been killed by bears than in all WWI and WWII combined.
