What kind of nut is this? All over my backyard. Had 4 does bedding down under the balsam firs there last winter. I think now I know why. The ground is covered with these. They are green when they fall on the ground an turn brown in a few days.

Most likely one of the three or four kinds of Hickories. Black Walnuts don't have "sutures" in the husk. When it dries out, the petals of the husk open to show a smooth shelled nut.

Tree will have a compound leaf with 5 to 7 leaflets.

Cool trees!

Hickory nuts. If you've never eaten the heart of the nut, Hickory nuts are quite tasty. I do, however, think they may be too hard for deer. Squirrels have a hard time knawing them and they have rodent teeth.

Crack one open with a hammer and look at how thick the shell is.

I have black walnut trees and these are not black walnuts. I also have hickory trees and these don't have the outer husk. They are on the tree just like this. I'll crack it open and see what's inside. The green part is not very hard, btw. Not like the shell on a hickory tree.

Hard to tell from the angle of the shot. It's not a pecan is it?

Post us a pic after you whack it. I'm interested in seeing the guts of it.

I think they are beech nuts.
Got any grey, smoothish skinned trees out back?

That is a hickory nut. The outter hull hasn't separated yet. It is not a beech nut or black walnut although it is in the same family as the black walnut(Juglans). Post a pic of the leaves and tree's bark for a more positive ID.

Looks like a Pignut Hickory to me...

More pictures would help, but it looks like hickory to me too from what I can tell.

hickory nut gets my vote. You have to spend a lot of time to get the meat out of them- but a handful in a white cake mix works really well.

Looks like Pignut hickory to me as well.

I agree, Pignut Hickory, they seem to be one of the less desirable of the hickorys to the squirrel.

Yep we call them Pig Nut Trees, although I'm far from an expert.

I'll crack it open and take a pic of the tree
That will do it
I have many hickory (shagbark) on the property, so would not be surprised if this were a kind of variant.
Do you think the deer like them? I think in Jan when the food supplies are low they will eat them>

Thanks

Ditto on the Hickory.  Excellent to use if yo are thirsty.  Do not remove nut form shell, just put hull in mouth.  You will produce slaiva and this helps if you have cotton mouth or a cough.
