Howard Hill's bow

I recently watched a calvacade of archery on youtube.  I noticed that the longbow Howard is shooting has a black side of the riser.  Does anyone know if that is glass laminated to the bow, on the side of the handle?

Later in his career glass did become available so it's possible.
