A few years ago a fellow, name witheld, shot aluminum arrows with his selfbow at the Sperry, OK traditional shoot.  He had forgotten and left the woodies at home.  When he showed up for the Arkansas State Longbow Championship he was notified that he had been sanctioned by the "North American Selfbow Association" and could no longer participate in North American events. It was a hoot. Selfbow shooter are some of the best leg pullers in the business.

If they work for ya and you like them - shoot them.

However, it's kind of like using night crawlers on the end of a bamboo flyrod - may be very effective, but something just doesn't seem right.

I shoot whatever shoots but have about got all my aluminums fased out. I like wood and cane. But you shoot whatever shoots good and don't worry about nobody else.

Just don't seem seem right, like mayo on a hot dog. I know, some will like it and do it anyway.
Do not use a hatchet to remove a fly from your friend's forehead...when your longbow with a blunt will work!

Isn't the idea of shooting a self bow to get back to a frame of mind that predates the advent of the more modern bow and arrow materials? Me I say no.

Nosage, I have seen you shoot carbons from your BBO bows.....no?

shoot what you want and don't worry about what people think.

I have a question, if you don't make it yourself is it still a self bow?????

I don't get it? Did I miss something here?

Are you saying carbons are too light and that's what ruined your bow? If that's what you're saying, then I have to differ with you. Maybe your carbons were too light but I know of many carbon arrow setups that are way heavier than POC arrows.

I used to think that carbons didn't go with self bows but now I say it matters not.

It's just an arrow, except for the "more traditional than thou" folks.

Jim,

I shoot carbons out of my self-bows and my hickory backed osage bows all the time.

The only thing I would be sure of (besides correct spine) is having an arrow weight of at least 9 grains per pound of bow weight for anything over 45-50 lbs of draw weight.

All my carbons are 575-600 grains and I shoot them in every bow I own.

In a moment of decision the best thing you can do is the right thing. The worst thing you can do is nothing.

Wow... what a can of worms huh?  Didn't mean to start anything. I shot a carbon from my selfbow with a 160 gr. snuffer on it and it shot great. That's all.
