Bama Recurve

I was shooting in the back yard with one of my buddies. He was shooting his new compound that looked more like a lazer gun and of course, his arrows really did look like lazers compared to mine.

He bragged and bragged about how fast his bow was. So, I told him to shoot across the field and we'll see how far apart the arrows are. The Wing Thunderbird put an arrow about 5ft. further!

Ha, i tried explaining that my recurve isn't fast like a compound, but it has a really smooth cast and a heavier arrow.
He didnt' get it...

Nice.  Always love it when a trad guy comes out ahead.  Speed is definately not everything.

Yep they think to have supernatural powers with those fast wheelies on their hands, but sometime we beat them.

Was shooting a round at the local archery club with a game warden friend of mine last weekend.  He was shooting a Hoyt compound and I was shooting an old Ben Pearson Cougar recurve that I've been playing around with.  He walked up to the compound shooting stake and ranged the broadside bull caribou target with his range finder (not a competition shoot so no scores kept or anything).  The caribou was across a neat little gorge and 34 1/2 yards away.  He drew his bow, settled his pin, released...AND MISSED THE TARGET COMPLETELY!  He had simply used the wrong pin by mistake, no big deal.

So then I decided to shoot from his stake, just for fun.  I figured I would at least hit the dang thing and make him look bad.  Not only did I hit it, but my cedar arrow sailed across that gorge and landed dead center of the twelve ring.  LOL!

Moral of the story is...yeah it sure feels good to out shoot a wheelie bow.

The real test for me is who brings home the game. I shot compounds for a while but ultimately decided that the recurve (or longbow) was a much more efficient hunting weapon. Even with all the new ILF stuff and carbon arrows, foam core limbs, the simple recurves/longbows are so much easier to hunt with and in the end are much more fun to shoot. There are any number of animals I have taken with my recurve that I would not have had time to shoot with all the compound accessories needed to make them work their best. And when I go to the few tournaments that I do, trad archers are ALWAYS the ones having the most fun.

Amen!!  to what Bill said.

Hey, Bill, will we see you at Poke n' Hope next weekend?

Another illustration that was told to me is a demonstration of penetration...wow, a lot of trations...  If you were to take a ping pong ball and a golf ball and throw them as hard as you can into a snow bank which one would penetrate the snow deeper? Yep, weight/force does matter.

To true on that one snag.  It is interesting  when my ultra high foc arrows get pulled by a compound guy.  They struggle and then get out their arrow pulling tools.  The comments always run to wow how heavy is that point?  How in the world did you outpenetrate my faster arrows?  Etc...

Bowmania

What's your point?  LOL!  Our BOWS are faster than compounds (insetuptime) they should go farther!!!

I'm not putting up with this guys shit and dogging me.

My compound friends have forgotten that I shoot a longbow. LOL!
May your next adventure lighten your heart, test your spirit, and nourish your soul.

A golf ball weighs 259 times more then a ping pong ball. So, to be a valid comparison, if a compound shooter shoots a 300 gr arrow are you going to compare it to a 77,700 (11.1 lbs) grain arrow from your bow. If so, please film it.  :)

SteveB, my point is an arrow that weighs twice as much being shot at a slower speed can out penetrate a lighter arrow being shot at a higher speed...momentum. But I guess this whole thing has been beat into the ground before.   :deadhorse:

If you really want to see compound guys moan make then kneel down & cant their bow to shoot under a low limb.

I agree! People are more impressed with a perfect 15yd shot with a trad bow vs. a 30yd shot with a compound.Everything in today's world is about obtaining instant gratification. I feel like a lot of guys would like to shoot a recurve or longbow, but are unwilling to really give it a try and sacrifice the real time it takes to become a good archer.

how about dropping a one pound brick and a one pound bag of feathers into the snow. What will penetrate deeper?

If a one pound brick and a one pound bag of feathers weigh the same. Why would you rather have the feathers be dropped on your head?    ;)
Time spent alone in the woods puts you closer to God.

"Can't" never accomplished anything.

This is a funny conversation in that it started with a flight shoot between a compound and a curve.  I'd say the compound shooter didn't know how to flight shoot.  His bow should have outshot the curve by 100yds.  In flight shooting it's not about penetration but flight.  Lighter faster arrows go farther especially when coming out at 130 fps faster.

Actually if you look at long range archery records ultralight faster arrows often don't travel as far a slower higher mass arrows.  There is a direct relationship to the velocity vector, arrow mass, and friction vectors that determines how far the arrow will travel.  Higher mass causes it to be harder for the friction to overcome the arrows forward momentum. Maximum distance for a compound is not necessarily going to farther than a longbow or recurves depending on the bow and arrow set ups.
