I just received some Surewoods that are footed with African Blackwood. They are 23/64" tapered to 11/32". Kye at Great Basin Footed Shafts does an incredible job. The footings are pinpoint sharp. I will try and post a picture of them tonight. I can't wait to make some arrows out of these beauties! Thanks Kye!!!  :clapper:

That sounds like a great combo.  Please post photos soon.  It should give you plenty of FOC too!

They came out spined at 77#-81#. I hope to be able to put 160gr tips on them. I'm going to stain the doug fir with Minwax English Chestnut which is a dark stain. The grain in the fir will be dark with the area between being lighter in color. Should go good with the dark Blackwood.

Looking forward to seeing these!

snag

I just checked on the properties of Blackwood. I was surprised to see that it has a specific gravity of 1.2. That is more than Gaboon Ebony. It has a density rating of 75-83. Whereas Gaboon is 63 pcf and Ipe is 66-75 pcf. I got lucky and picked the right wood!

I bought some POCs footed with Cocobola from him a month or so ago. He does great work!

snag

Hey BMEjia, how did you go about finishing these? With the oils in the exotic woods he recommended lightly wiping on a thin layer, let dry, do another, and so on for 2 to 3 layers. This way the oils won't bleed out onto the lighter colored wood...hopefully. Have you made them into arrows yet?

Bring on the pics so I can drool!

I got some POC footed with purple heart. I am impressed with the footings and the shafts are straight. I haven't made them up yet. I think I will go with a sanded in finish using tru-oil.
I may cap dip also.

Here are some PH footed POC shafts that I finished off a couple of years back that were made up by Kye.  He does an outstanding job footing shafts and is a true craftsman. dino

Kye makes some great shafts! And he is a good guy to deal with..

snag

These shafts are straight as can be. After he foots them he sands them. Not a wobble in the bunch!

Man those are some nice looking shafts. Gary

snag

I'm glad he tapered the tips because that Blackwood is some hard stuff!
