Footing aluminum shafts

I was given some 2018 aluminum shafts cut to 27.5 inches. To get them where I would like them I need to add half an inch to their length. (I do not want to increase the point weight to soften the spine.)

I've added 1/4 inch to alum shafts before but not 1/2 inch. Anyone have any ideas or thoughts on this???

I've spliced quite a few of my aluminums. Usually I splice them with a smaller diameter shaft about 4" long inside, which puts 2" on each side of the splice. At a minimum, the short side of the splice needs to be 2" plus the depth of an insert.

This works for me, as I shoot 32" arrows and my spliced shafts are typically either flu-flu's or stumpers. Aside from going the cut them shorter route, you'd probably need to find/make a longer insert to just add ½". Good Luck...Enjoy, Rick.

Sand a wooden shaft down until it slides inside the metal shaft.  Taper the wooden shaft for the point and leave it hang out of the front of the metal shaft by 1/2".  Rather than buy tapered field point inserts for shafts I used to do this all the time.  Doesn't add much weight to the arrow.

You could put the wooden shaft piece in a drill press and sand it down until it fits inside the metal arrow and leave a lip on the wooden shaft so it butts up to the end of metal shaft and then taper for your point.

I never thought about splicing aluminums. Have done it on bamboo and cane. What do you glue the splice with, and what size insert would you need for 2016's or 2018's? Would like to give it a try. Thanks.

A 1716 fits inside a 2018. Can't find a 2016 at the moment but 1716 would be a looser fit...how much, don't know. I use epoxy. Enjoy, Rick.

I have 2, 2117, presently used for stumping and squirrels, splice together with a 6" piece of Vapor carbon 35/45 size. Works great.

One arrow is a combo of A. orange and legacy. It has taken a beaten. I got the idea from an article about takedown arrows for lion hunts.
