Hey, I'm going to go try and kill a hog or two on Sunday. Are there any good tutorials with pictures on skinning and cleaning them? Something for a first timer?   :readit:

Thanks in advance! =0)

Will this be you first hill ever or have you taken deer before? If you have taken deer and field dressed and skined them it is just the same.

Its the same..only much much more disgusting.

Chris Surtees

Skin them like a deer and wear rubber gloves just to be on the safe side.

fido dog

Pops, this will be my first attempt at ANYTHING. The first hill ever as you described.

I have watched a state game video (KY I think) a bunch of times on field dressing a deer. It's kinda' hard to get the gist completely with a 3 1/2" video.

I don't know how prevalent brucellosis in the hogs where you hunt but I'd say exercise caution whenever cleaning feral hogs as they can carry stuff that you don't want to contract.
A recent article in the houston chronicle talked about brucellosis in east texas.  Swine brucellosis can be a debilitating and chronic disease.  I'll try to find the article and post up.

Andrew,
You need to make the Texas Sweat hunt if Feb - we'll show you all you need to know in 5 days. Look under 7th age Bowhunts or do search for Texas Sweat and see what it is all about.

Here is the article from Sept 2009.

Again just exercise caution.  IIRC, its rare for humans to contract brucellosis from pigs (most incidents are slaughterhouse workers and a few hunters) but if you do contract it, the disease can be serious.

I've read that brucellosis has caused spontaneous abortions in pregnant female humans. To me that means that the disease is strong.

The last 3 pigs I cleaned I used the no gutting method b/c I hate gutting pigs.  String em up. Skin em. Take off backstraps.  Take off hams and shoulders.  By not gutting them you do lose out on the inner loins.

Wear gloves when skinning, quartering and deboninig. I know some people here in TX who wear those surgical masks too. I know others who kill em and let em lay.

Hey I will PM you my cell phone number and I can walk you through what I do.

I use the no gut method too.
Ask me about CTO.

Been guttin, skining, and cutting up hog for a little over 30 years. Just like with any raw meat just be careful, im more worried about raw chickin than skining a hog. Gloves are a good idea i use the ones that come all the way up to your arm pits and watch for cuts on your hands.

O and dont leave those tender loins man they melt in your mouth.

I wish i had a source to give you on a how to.

Check youtube there might be somthing there for deer or hog

Andrew, sounds like you are getting plenty of help.  Keep it simple and protect yourself.  One cut at a time and do not get in a hurry even though you wish you could, that's when accidents happen  ;)

dose the hide peel off like a deer? a deer hide comes easy.

fido dog

Anything more on the "No Gut Method"??

I saw a couple of Youtube vids. I guess you skin them, remove the head then gut them??

Cut them open and take out everything you don't want to eat.Take the hide off and do the same thing with whatever you got left.Really simple.  :D

These were the only directions I had for my first deer and it worked out fine.  ;)
....Quality deer management means shooting them before they get tough....

Well you need to do like I did.  When I was a kid, (a long time ago I might add)I had taken a lot of animals but my dad always did the field dressing while I held legs and watched.  Finally when I was 14 I think, I asked him on the way out if we got one that day, if it would be OK if I did the work.  Figured I needed to learn.

Well I shot a nice buck that morning and when Dad and I got there, he said, "you know where the truck is?"  I pointed in the direction, he said "thanks, I'm going to get some coffee, you take care of this guy."

That was it, I stood and watched him walk away.  And shortly there after I openned him up and took out everything I didn't want to eat.  Drug him to the truck and went to camp.  Took off the hide and put a sheet wrap on him.

It's pretty easy really, just takes longer when your starting out.
