Hey guys thanks. It's a cool story.  I know its not a monster for Iowa and such, but for NJ, he's a pretty good buck.
He is actually the smaller of the two from this year.  (In NJ we only get two buck tags during the bow season.)
Got to run out this morning and help a buddy find his buck.

Hi Tim.  I don't get on here much, just too much going on.
We found my buddy's buck this morning.  Hell of a recovery.  Hit the bottom lobe of one lung.  Nice 8pt.

Anyway, its been a great year for the family.  My son Zac (Now 11) shot his earn-a-buck doe on the first Sunday of bowhunting in N.J. (35LB 40 year old bear Kodiak the he is pulling at about 28LB.) The next day, he shot a nice 8pt. That was his 9th deer with that bow.
Not sure how to post photos of his buck here, but I'll try.  After that, we have been passing up tons of deer in my back woods looking for these two big boys that folks have been seeing in the headlights and such. We bought a house in a beautiful valley, "Pleasant Valley" last year. Lots of county land that is unhunted which produces good bucks. Got lucky and put down the bigger of the two one morning with a double lung tap.  He went 60 yards. Was rushed and took poor photos of him.  I'll try to post one of them as well.  Then, it was on to the next "big dark 8pt" guys were seeing crossing the road at night.  My buddy that lives in the woods behind me saw him from his window several weeks back in fanning light with his binos.  I had seen good rubs and one 8-9 inches around right on my property.  One rubbing tree that had been hit for many many years prior.  Not hit last year, but tore up this year.  Long and short of it, I jumped up in the stand 45 minutes before dark and grunted in a small 6pt. that came from my right, right under me and now to my left. Right behind him comes this dark 8.  On high alert looking for the grunting buck he caught me seated.  He was so alert and coming in straight on from the right that I could not stand or turn.  (I am a righty.) All I could do was hope we would continue on his path under me and I would shoot from a seated position as he passed by.  Well, he took 3 to 4 minutes to go the last ten yards and even though the wind was in my favor, you just can't be that close for that long and have him not get your wind.  Needless to say, he did.  He started the "moon walk" and was turning to bolt.  I said to myself, if this deer leaves here without an arrow in him, I really messed up.  So as he was turning to bolt, I was turning in my seat to my right, stretching to find anchor.

Sorry, had a call.  Anyway, it was a fleeting shot and about 6 yards just as the buck was bolting away.  I knew it was rearward of perfect and actually thought it was a gut shot.  He ran 40 to 50 yards and stopped.  I could not see him, only hear him.  Wet rainy night so even hearing him was hard.  I committed to staying on stand 2 hours after dark since I'm sure he laid down not far ands I did not want to push him, especially with the rain.  After about 5 to 10 minutes, I hear a major ruckus.  I thought it was him going down.  After another 5 to 10 minutes, the same thing, but this time I heard antlers!  He was getting his butt kicked by another buck while he was hurt!  Man I whish I could have seen that.  I stayed up for the two hours in the dark and without a light, slipped out of there heading the opposite way back into the woods.  I walked well around several hundred yards away from where I last heard him and to my friend's house which is actually in the next county.  Not too far.  He gave me a ride home.  The next morning I put him and my wife Suzy on the hillside over looking this area.  Expecting a day of body searching for a gut hit buck after a night of rain.  They were in position to see any deer I might kick up.  Low and behold, there he was 60 yards from the tree!  The arrow took him through the liver.  He was pretty banged up from the other buck, but dead none the less.

Great buck anywhere for sure! And excellent woodsmanship - anyone struggling with recovery needs to listen to Phil and his friends - Great guys - and WHO you want with you on a blood trail. WELL DONE!

Thats a great buck even for my standards here in Iowa.  I would have no problem shooting that deer any day of the week.  I want to see these huge Iowa bucks everyone keeps talkign about and this is the only place I've ever hunted whitetails and I've been at it for 12 years!!
