I had to wait for shotgun season to  open, done had gotten my 2 archery birds. In shotgun season you can use bow or shotgun or ML shotgun. I decided it was a no brainer, recurve or nothin! This morning, 35 minutes after daylight, hear a couple of gobbles, and 2 yelps. Was deer hunting, but decided to yelp with my mouth, and got an immediate response. Yelped a couple of more times and here come the birds. Had 5 fly right in beside my permanent natural blind, and 7 more in front of me in 2 minutes. ! I was not ready for this, but managed to stay still, rest my bow on my toe, shaking a little bit! Still more birds coming across the field, 2 flocks together, about 30 birds within 25 yards of me.Wind picked up and shook a few acorns loose, got them to disperse a little, and a couple of acorns drop into the blind. The "blind" is a circle of pine trees, about 8'x4' inside diameter, I planted several years ago, with the limbs wrapped and woven together, with black landscaping material tied to the bottom 2 feet high, and camo cloth in back and sides 4 feet high. Well one big hen hears them acorns, walks right into the blind and starts scratching  and picking up acorns 10 inches from me, even scratches the side of my boot twice. I am about to LOOOSE IT!She looks me over purrs a couple of times and then goes back out to raid my cover crop with the other birds. I finally catch most of them with their head down or turned away, raise my Quinn about 4 inches and draw, anchor and drill one at 14 feet! Flies off about 50 yards and crashes. Them woodsmans do a job! There was birds running everywhere, best I could count was either 30-32 birds in this bunch. I had to wait 45 minutes for them to leave before I could get my bird. I will be there at daylight tommorow, one last tag. I am not a good turkey hunter, cant hear well enought, and got my first ever archery turkey last year with a longbow, just hoped to get another this year and have been blessed with 3! Just wanted to share, am so stoked I am about to pop. Sam.

That is not an easy task.  Congrats!

Not a good turkey hunter? I guess it is better to be lucky than good then. Somehow I think you are being modest Sam! Congrats and good luck with the 2nd tag. How about a picture to go with the great story next time?

Sure wish we could take more than one fall bird. Ever since I got mine in early October, I have been covered up with them while deer hunting. That will make the spring season all the better, I guess. Way to go on getting three!

I just wish we had a fall season!  I've had birds all around me deer hunting and all I can do is watch!  Better look out in the spring cause I'm bringing it with a brand new Treadway to boot!

Altiman94

why are the birds gobbling out there in the fall?  Here in Iowa you will only hear gobbles in the spring for the most part.

Altiman 94, they frequently gobble at flydown,or when startled, and have heard them gobble at owl calls a lot, especially when on the roost. Not the type of gobbling you hear in the spring, not even close, just occasional to let everyone know where everyone else is, I guess.
