I am thinking about trying to take some quail with a bow this year. Has anyone here done it? Any advice?
Aim small, miss small!!

Yolla Bolly

Hit one once--(mountain quail) with a rubber blunt. Knocked him over with a shot right to the wing root. Feathers flew.  Then he got up, shook his head, and walked into the chaparrel.  (It was a long shot (50+ yards) with a light arrow (1816 easton).  Missed a bunch before and since.  Don't think they will walk away from a Grizz Stick and 250 grain hex.

I tried a few times but found that the quail outfly the arrow if they're going away from you.
IMO it can be done, but you gotta be close and quick  :-)

I've killed several on the wing, but have had the best luck when conditions are wet and they are hesitant to fly.

Regular (non flu flu) arrows and steel blunts do fine.

Do a search for a Topic by Guru called "Fur, Fin and Feather Southern Style" ...It's very hard to pull off...We shot a lot and knocked the feathers out of Several more that didn't go down. Here is the only one that we actually shot on the Wing. Zwicky Condor Helped....

Shot one with a Simmons Treeshark once on the wing at a quartering away angle... all that was left was a single tail feather and tiny piece of the beak.   :saywhat:

Just kiddin'

Hiram Grogan wrote about hunting quail with the bow in his book, "Modern Bow Hunting" written in 1958.  I would say that it would be a challenge to say the very least.

I've never done it but it sure sounds like fun Good luck and let us know how you do!
Its not the size of the animal you hunt that matters. Its how you hunt the animal.

I've taken one on the ground. None in flight. Hap

I've tried in Nebraska (where I was operating under the assumption that the bird can only be killed in flight! Check your local laws).  Hunted snowy conditions where they wouldn't fly far and chased them all over an ancient famstead.  I kicked them up over and over for a couple hours.  Never did get one, but had dozens of shoulda, woulda, coulda.  It can be done I am sure.  I would have hunted them all day if I had the time.

Twice I was able to track a covey in the snow and connected when they ran.  The running birds just seemed to give me more time to get off a shot.  When they took flight all I could manage was a quick snap shot.  I do believe that with a pointing dog you would have a much better chance getting off a good shot.

Charlie, I assume those are not Bobwhite?
Is it too late to be what I could have been?

Charlie Lamb

John... they are bobwhites.

Past couple of years ive been learning to turkey call with a diafram call and playing around with it i have been able to make it sound like a lost quail call. Im going to see what happens the next time i split some up. maybe they will come back to me.

Will be shooting them on the ground, i dont have enough arrows to try wing shooting them    :saywhat:

I've killed many over the years with a bow. I even got one with the Little Delta Bow while Shaun Webb filmed from behind me. The big Blue Quail are my favorite. You generally shoot them on the run instead of the wing. Blues don't like to fly if they can run. CK
