question for cyote shooters

If you shoot a Cyote, what do you do with it? I've seen a cyote or two on the woodlot i'm hunting. THey eat all the rabbits so I'm thinking about shooting one if I happen to be close enough. I don't just want to leave a dead cyote though. How do you guys use the carcass?

First off make sure it is legal to shoot.  After you shoot one skin it out.  Get it tanned and make a quiver or hat out of the hide.

You could eat it, but most people aren't real keen on that.
The only other thing worth anything on a coyote is the fur. If you shoot one now the fur will probably not be prime. It'd still work for a quiver or something, but prime would be better. I think prime fur starts to roll around sometime mid-October.

just give it to a taxidermist. they might mount it to sell to someone? other than that , if it doesnt have a prime coat....well...you will have one less coyote.

if it's mangy bury it..if not they won't be prime till late nov-dec depending on the weather, but you could have it tanned, keep the skull or sell it (donate it to a school biology class), claws for projects, bones for projects, some local trappers might take the glands, and bladder for the pee if fresh.

Cut it up like a deer.  Put it in a big pot of water with a nice sassafras log.  Cook all day.  Throw away the coyote & eat the sassafras log.

I have killed several while bowhunting for deer. The first one I thought I might try eating...until I started skinning it, one whiff of that was enough for me to never eat coyote. The native americans used to eat it often and overseas dog is considered a delicacy so if you are adventures go ahead and eat it. Just cook it very well as they can carry several deseases and parasites that you would not want. I would consider freezing it in a deep freeze as an extra precaution agianst parasites. If I were you I would carefully skin it without cutting into the carcass to gut it as you would with a deer, then quarter it without opening the digestive cavity.

Skin the dog,leave what's left out in the woods and shoot another dog off it.I use any sizable nusaince animal I shoot for a bait pile for yote hunting.

If the killing and not eating bothers you leave em alone cause once you smell em you might just up and walk away.Theyre a foul smelling critter.If you get a prime one they make a beautiful rug.

Hang 'em high from the most visible pole or fence. Pee at that spot every chance you get. Let the coyotes know, and trust me they get the message, that man is the Alpha Dog on whatever parcel you own/hunt. It has worked wonders for me on the land I hunt on.

+1 to this. Seen it done many times. Haven't seen a coyote in years where I hunt because the farmer in that area does the same exact thing...

If you do get one, and intend to skin it, it takes a sharp knife and patience.

The hide does not peel off the way deer hide does.
The hide is thinner and softer, and the knife comes through the skin very easy, and pulling on a nick in the hide will rip it further.

I always use rubber gloves when dealing with yotes.

I've taken over a half-dozen with the bow. I even rattled quite a few in with horns during the deer season. They are usually on red alert though, and tough to get a close shot at. Mike
