Me too, but it's going to be a bit tough even getting out this year. Amy has been pretty sick lately and there is a lot to do around the house with the kids and all.

If I wasn't the one planning it, I likely wouldn't make it out.

I still look forward to a little time to reset my brain though.

Ususally 9-12 guys are hunting on any given day.

AEP has about 34 thousand acres of reclaimed mining land allowable for hunting. We hunt an area that has about 20 thouand acreas of that total. Yes, I said 20,000! The place is huge and much of it is never even hunted until gun season.

There are a number of deer that will grow old and die in there due to the terrain. It is rough country with lots of highwalls and marshy areas. Plenty of hideouts for huge bucks!

Which area do you guys hunt and camp at? Do they have electric or is it all primitive?

waknstak,

Campsite K off of road T13 is where we camp. It is south of Cumberland Ohio about 7 miles. Check page one of this thread for all the info.

There are a good number of out-of-state guys that hunt AEP, but I seldom run into anyone near where I hunt. I honestly don't even have to go in all that far. It is just an out of the way place in the middle of nowhere. You are as likely to shoot a deer in the marshes as on a ridge top. The key to this place is the funnels.
There are tons of ponds and highwalls that block travel.

If you can get to the back of the ponds, there are usually heavy deer trails there. I wish to God I had a canoe and trailer. I can't imagine how many more deer you could get to!

Another good way to hunt out there is to find where the deer go around the high walls. Again you will find heavy trails in these locations.

I hunted a funnel that wasn't hot this last weekend, but it will be soon! I have seen a good number of deer there in the past.

This is mostly reclaimed mining land. So it is what it sounds like. A big high wall, usually make of rock. Some of these I've seen 100 ft high. The deer have to manuver around these just like we do.

I've seen deer run straight up those shale cliffs! The areas that are above are usually mature hard woods, during gun season deer run off on occasion, You definitely want to be mindful in the dark!   :scared:

Our reclaimed mining areas here don't have those. Or at least the ones I've hunted. usually just big mounds with a lot of small deep lakes here but no steep drops.

I've seen them jump straight off the highwalls and land on the slope at the bottom without breaking stride.  Pretty amazing.

I have seen deer jump highwalls during gun season when they felt obligated to jump or die for sure. Otherwise, when bowhunting they usually go around. BINGO  :scared:

Anyway, it will make a heck of an evening hunting spot when I can see what I'm doing!
