The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

OK...........some details:

I shot this little doe in first week of November on the edge of a deep ravine on a neighbor's property. He had told me to hunt the bottom because the does bed there every day. The day before, I had been in the bottom and sat there stuck as a doe waltzed down for the opposite side, walked towards me and bedded down only 5 yds from my stand, but on my left side. I'm left handed and since I didn't move early enough, I didn't dare move then. After about 45 minutes she just calmly stood up and walked back the way she came.

So, next day I climb the opposite side of ravine and climb up about 35' up a tree and nestle my climber right in a big bundle of grape vines. Watched a big buck come out early about 40 yds away, scout the vineyard and leave. Next 4 does came from same direction and followed his path. About 2 hours later, I'm thinking I picked eh wrong spot when this little lady comes running along the bottom, up the side, and right to me. Lucky I learned from teh previous day and had stood up when I first saw her. She started browsing to my left about 10 yds away. I drew back and for some reason she scooted forward a little jog and was now even closer but more in front of stand. I swung back around a little, re-drew and let it fly.  Watched her run along teh edge for a bit and then tear off down the bottom. My heart was THUMPING!!!!!
After about 30 minutes, I climbed down, unhooked my stand, packed up my stuff and took off on the track. No Blood! But i had clearly seen my unmistakeable Flag going through the woods. circled about 25-30 yds up and WHOA!  Blood everywhere! Of course, I had to crawl on my hands and knees about 40 yds through some nasty briars as she took the most inaccessible route down the ravine, but she was laying just a few steps from the bottom. I actually jumped up and Whooped!!   :archer:

To me, the ultimate challenge in bowhunting is not how far away you can succesfully make a killing shot but rather how close you can get to the animal before shooting.
