I believe that the key with all scents is to use something that hasn't been associated with danger. For example on one lease that I hunted, a hunter on adjacent property regularly used Vanilla Extract as a cover scent and attractent. On that lease VK or Vanilla seemed to make the deer more nervous.
Six miles away, I was the only person using it and I was very careful to avoid spooking deer in other ways. It was very effective there.
I believe that the same model holds true for deer urine. I noted in another post that the best urine scents I had used were fresh and from local deer. I believe that the effectiveness was due to the fact that the scent was familiar. On the other hand, using an unfamiliar dominant buck scent has a tendency to make subordinant bucks more tense (in my experience).
I had more success with VK than Deer Dander when I was using them.
