No, not a confession (although I've made my share . . . )

A recommendation -- Alaska Magazine has just published in the October 2008 issue an excellent article, "Beginner's Mistakes."  The article was written by Trad Gang member (and much-admired outdoor writer) Don Thomas.  Anyone contemplating a trip to the Great Land for a hunt or any other backcountry purpose should scurry down to the newsstand and buy this issue.  This article should be read carefully, line by line, and taken to heart.  After you've done that, you can enjoy the rest of an exemplary issue of the mag.

As someone who once searched for an overdue sheep hunter who was the subject of TWO search-and-rescue missions during the same week-long hunt, I applaud Mr. Thomas for his preventive instruction.  Kudos to him, and to the editors for reviving the "Alaska Sportsman" banner under which it appears!

Made a few of them mistakes. AK is not very user freindly sometimes.
Porquipines are peacefull creatures, but God still saw fit to give them quills.

Charles, I saw that article as well.  Great article by a great writer in a great magazine.
Scotty, you got that right!  I still make some of them!

I've got a suggestion, if you plan to be there for say 10 days you should plan on being able to stay for at least 15 days!

Been there and done that, Ethan.  Always good to take a few extra days off on each end, especially the end of the hunt.

Very good article.  Thanks for posting about it.  And thanks to Tom for the link.

I have always dreamed of Alaska.  I will get there someday.  Many years ago, Mike Misch, posted this letter I think on the Bowsite or maybe bowhunting.net.  Anyways, it gives some more great info:    Mike Misch on Hunting Alaska
Take a kid hunting!

Tom,
Thanks for posting the link.  I meant to look for one but got distracted.
