I missed...

Greetings All,

6 September was our opener here in Montana. And this opener was special for a good reason... I took my 8 year old daughter Kassi for her first sit in a treestand for White Tails. We saw lots od der opening am but never had anything close enough to shoot.

Sat evening was a different story... We didn't see as many deer as we did in the am but we had a nice 3x3 buck in velvet and his "doefriend" as Kas called her, come right up to 10 yards on her side of the tree...

Well, they grazed on the flora and hung out for a while (this is a staging area they use until they decide to venture out into the fields to eat). I told Kas I would shoot which ever one offered me a shot as I have a doe tag in this area as well.

Well the doe walked away without ever offering the chance, but the buck took a different trail...

I told Kassi to keep an eye on the buck and started my draw. I made the corner of my mouth and felt the string leave my fingers...In slow motion, I watched the three yellow feathers spiral right over the top of his shoulders...Dang!!

I know I looked at the whole deer. I was not concentrating as I was thinking of how cool this was being here with my little girl and she was going to take it all in...

After the shot, the buck took 2 jumps, looked around and came back, never offering another shot. Finally, after another 10 minutes, he and his "doefriend" left.

Kas finally told me, "Dad, my legs won't quit shaking, and my heart is pumping really hard!". I smiled and told her that still happens to me after 26 years of bowhunting. She THEN asked me why I missed. "Dad, you're a pretty good shot." I told her it does happen. She just gave me a big smile and told me she could not wait to get in the tree Sunday am...

Happy hunting,
Jason

Welcome to the club! We have all been there. At least you and Kas got to enjoy the adventure together and you will get another chance to show Kas that you really are a good shot.
Next time, CONCENTRATE!!!    d;^)         Pat

Probably the best "miss" you will ever have.

Congratulations on your new life long hunting partner.

If you never miss your "just not trying"... LOL

Thats what I was told years ago. I have found that after a miss when you "do it right" things are made even more sweeter... I've learned from every missed shot.

That is awesome! It is great to hear that there are at least a few parents spending time with their children!

Embrace those times my friend. Theres something very special about taking a child hunting. I have been slowly introducing my  daughter. Even though it gets a little boring sometimes for her, I look foward to those times.
