I'm with Killy about the front porch. A Little rain on the tin roof, good conversation with friends, enjoying the outdoors but not quite in it. You are all blessed to have such a great hunting camp. We don't see much of that around here. Good luck with the bear Ron.

A quick little poem inspired by the pictures.
"
The camp sits on some land Up North
It never bothered us to drive all that way, back and forth
My father built the cabin back before I was born
With his brother and his cousin and a Yooper named Bjorn
It's sturdy and shuttered against bears and the storms
They The Great White North considers the norm
I killed my first deer there when I was 13
He was a fork horn 3 year old that was sleek and lean
I dressed him myself and drug all the way back to camp
I showed him off to my dad and brother in the light of the coleman lamps
I miss the old place more with each passing season
I guess that nostalgia is the biggest reason
So if you have a cabin even on a small piece of land
Cherish it and use it anytime that you can
It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage so rare. ~Mark Twain

Ron, since you left your 4x4's long on the back porch, is a porch roof going to be #1 on your list for next year?

Greg,  A roof is in the future as well as a small room off the left hand side of the porch where the new door currently is (door will get moved to the outside of new room). Also, there's been discussion of driving a hand well so that we don't have to keep making runs to town for water.

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Sounds great Ron, especially the bear hunt. Looking forward to seeing pics. Seems to me that a new bear rug would be just the ticket to go along with the improvements. You got to keep those bears in their place  :D  you know.

Makes me wish I had a place like that.

- The Ballad of Shrew Hollow -

Down in Shrew hollow by old Armstrong creek

sits a little log cabin with wood floors that
squeak

In the evening the soft glow of gas lights are there...

while outside there are Whitetails, Gray Wolves and Black bear

Up on the oak ridge the acorns are falling

the bucks they are grunting, the does they are calling

so we slip in our stand and we wait for a buck

If the wind is just right, all we'll need is some luck

Now come hang up your buck on our deer hanging rail

then sit by the fire and tell us your tale

For the stories of hunting is why we come here

To hear the stories and to hunt for the great Whitail deer.

It's actually a song.

We had some fun with G Fred when he came up to hunt at Shrew Haven by making up a verse just for him.

"Down in Shrew Hollow by old Armstrong Creek

Old G Fred Asbell came hunting one week

He stalked and he still hunted while he was here

but old G Fred Asbell went home with no deer

He had his chance but his shot it went low

Maybe it was that old Black Widow bow

If he'd had a Super Shrew when his chance came

Old G Fred would have lived up to his name"
