I know this is going to be a shot in the dark, but do any of you have a riser made out of African Padauk wood? If so, could you possibly post a photo of it?

Here's one from a Jack Howard brochure. The red wood is Paduk also called Vermillion.

Basically a plain wood (little grain contrast) but a beautiful red color.

Doc,

You've got lots of good looking photos on that link. I'd like to order a Brackenbury Legend and one of the choices for the riser is padauk. I like the reddish color of padauk and it keeps catching my eye.

Not as stunning as some woods maybe, but I really love the look of Padauk.  Kind of like osage in my mind.  Simple, elegant, and classic looking.  I have a Fox Royal Crown with Padauk and Canary Wood riser that is just about as pretty as they come in my opinion.

That is something...

How long did it take you to hand place those arras?

Mitchell, look for the nail I was trying to hit. Chris Sparks does make a beautiful bow.

Swamp Pygmy

I'm with you guys. I think with the proper accents it's beautiful wood.

Is it expensive?

Bentpole,

That is a beauty! I know padauk gets darker with age. How old is your bow?

Joe, that was a brand new bow that Chris Sparks at Lewis Hollow was using as his try before you buy bow.The riser was beautiful,it was  the first time I ever saw Padauk and I was impressed. The bow had osage limbs and it looked amazing. The accent stripe is phenolic or black bow tuff if I remember. He puts that in all his bows.Really "Sparks" the riser up [pun intended]. Needless to say I ordered one. Not the same woods though. All Grey actionwood riser, with edge grain grey actionwood veneers over actionwood cores.

Thomas,

All of my research for my next T/D recurve bow is complete. I'm going to have Bill Howland build me a Brackenbury Legend. The riser is going to be padauk and the limbs will be actionboo covered with red strips. The riser overlays and limb tips will be coverered by black glass. Below is a photo of Sue Pardue with her Brackenbury T/D recurve bow. I was trying to match her wood, but although the picture shows the woods to be reddish orange, her riser is  African pink ivory and her bow is pink. Her bow's limbs are actionboo though.

I'm going to put my 64" Bob Lee SH T/D recurve bow up for sale next week in the Traditional classified section and use the sale of the BL to put a down payment on a 68" Brackenbury Legend.

You will be more than satisfied with a bow from Bill H. at Brackenbury.  He is one of the few craftsmen left that offer a truly "custom" bow.

Pink Ivory is only pink when its fresh cut. It looks like that old Bazooka bubble gum we used to chew when we were kids.

With sun exposure, it darkens to a honey orange brown...very nice wood...but expensive and no grain to speak of.

I talked with Bill last Monday and he told me he thinks padauk would be a better choice since pink ivory is not only expensive, but it's a rare wood also.
