I'm quite fired up here.  Neck is fixin to swell.  Can't take much more of this long hard wait.  Scoutin a couple of times a week, shootin more'n I should, makin grunt tubes and wearin out reeds.   :help:

Anyway, the point of the thread.  I'd like to hear all the Successful Setups (bow,#,head, arrow, distance, etc...) that ya'll have used to take elk.  Also, show us those pics to prove it!

I'll start!  I've taken a pile of bulls with training wheels but, this is a TRAD thread.  this ones reaching back a little bit, I've only been shootin stickbows for 6 years.  He was the first bull I took with a longbow.

Called him up around 10 am.  Broadside shot @ 28 yards.  Arrow actually clipped a branch part way, cut it clean.  I think I only got one lung.  But, 150 yards later, dead is dead.  Many thanks were given for this bull.      :notworthy:

Recipe;
Home Made R/D Longbow-
62#@28", 2
8.5" Grizz Stik Alaskan.
Alum insert, 190 gr Ribtek off the tree branch into the lung.

25yds slightly quarting away -- complete penetration.
To me, the ultimate challenge in bowhunting is not how far away you can succesfully make a killing shot but rather how close you can get to the animal before shooting.

Elkbreath,

I posted a pictorial of that hunt a year and a half ago.  I have done a few picture stories that you newly registered tradgangers probably haven't seen. I will bring them up in a new thread:  Chronicles of the Missouri Sherpa    I will post it in a few minutes.

elkbreath

I'll find it.  thanks.

PS, I used to be 'purist' not elkbreath, been around here a little while.

Richie can't really tell you. That particular bow seemed to like a little lighter spine than I would have expected. I started out trying to shoot 2219's which had worked out of my 65lb Habu Death Adder but that was too stiff. The 2020's would make a bullet hole when paper tuning and broadhead tipped arrows flew great so that is what I used. I now use Easton Axis 340's with extreme front of center by adding 125gr brass inserts and shooting a 185 gr. Snuffer.

Missouri Sherp, I didn't think a two blade left a blood trail? Stop going against the norm please!   ;)

Great photos guys, hopefully head out that way in 2009.
