Like Fred Bear's Restless spirit says, we like old orchards.

I've been hunting an abandoned apricot orchard lately. It's loaded with fruit and has been pulling in pigs on a string.

A couple of weeks ago the wind was right to approach the small grove of trees that was providing the food. Slowly making my way to the edge of the orchard I soon heard them feeding and moving around. There was a group of small pigs having a great time blissfully unaware of my presence. I managed a 20 yard shot with a Simmons treeshark and they disappeared into the long grass surrounding the orchard. I managed to find the little pig which didn't go far. 

This was the first kill with a new to me bow. Satori riser with Border hex6.5h limbs. It's my backup bow.

Yesterday afternoon the wind was good once more so I ventured out again and approached from the same direction. I spotted a lone boar straight away and dropped my pack. He foraged right to me and gave me a shot at about 5 yards. Shot looked a bit high and back and their wasn't much blood. I didn't fancy my chances of finding him with the orchard being surrounded by long grass.

I looked for my arrow and couldn't locate it and decided just to follow his exit path while looking for any blood. As I walked out the other side of the orchard there was a small clearing of short grass and to my surprise there he was, dead.

I field dressed him and found that I actually got the back of both lungs and the liver. Not as far back as I thought it was.

Looking forward to some hot smoked pork.


Used my Border Black Douglas this time. Magnus 1 head. Found my arrow too. Had a lumenock on it. Handy in long grass.
