My father inlaw and brother inlaw hunt on the ground exclusively.
You can't get away with much movement, but they both punch a tag every year. If I could only go 4ft, I would brush in a natural blind and stay on they ground. You don't get any advantage from your stand at that point, it just limits shooting positions.

Saw a video where the owner of lone wolf custom gear goes 7-10'. He has shot nice deer. His favorite height is 7'.

Maybe 7 feet, I hung the stand while standing on the ground. Typically I'm around the 10 to 12 feet range. I used to be a firm believer in 18 to 20 feet until I experimented and realized that most of the time, it's not needed. I'd say give it a shot and it may surprise you!.
