Our club's annual 3-D "Rock Shoot" will be coming up next month where 45 or more 3-D animals are placed among the sagebush and rocky outcroppings.

Yesterday, I took some quarter inch steel and cut out two rockchucks (groundhogs to some of you).

These 30" tall critters ("Rocky" and "Chucky") have 9" kill zones.

For safety concerns, what is the closest an archer could shoot without concern to bounce backs?

OK...OK...I was no art major...

the arrow will not bounce.. They Disintegrate, !!!
Our club put some out , what a hoot... Arrow traps...Shoot them at least 10 yards away...
We put a big piece of foam on the back, covering the hole, the arrow will stick in that, and then they can be scored.

robslifts

ill second the ten yds    and yes put a block target or something behind them  it will help

Agree with the above statements as well.

The way i have seen most scored is a hit in the foam is the 10 ring the steel is 0 of course and at some shoots they will put out a small 3d foam target for those who dont want to shoot the steel. Any where on the 3d foam target is 5 points. 10 yards would be a good starting point.

What I've done at our shoots sometimes is put our steel turkeys at about 16 yards, and the 5 inch vital is worth 25 points. Those who don't want to shoot the steel can shoot at a foam turkey at about 50 yards with standard 10,8,5 scoring. It's a lot of fun watching guys choose either one.

I'd be laughing to hard to shoot at the darn things. Too dang funny.

The most frightening thing you are likely to encounter in nature is yourself.

Izzy

I think theyre cool looking. The holes are rather large though.

cch

With holes that big you need to put them out at 30yds.

Buffalo Two Fletch

Excellent! Love homemade targets!

Blackhawk

cch says holes are too big.   :(

Isn't the kill zone of a big deer about 9 inches?  ...and isn't the average trad kill made at 17 yards?   :readit:

OK, we can put one at 10 yards for me and the cubs and put one at 30 for you and Byron Ferguson.     :biglaugh:

Some arrows will bounce back.  To avoid hitting the shooter, tilt the targets forward a little.  Then, the arrows will bounce/deflect into the ground as they bounce back.

Always a lot of fun.  In our bowhunter education courses, we always ask folks what their maximum effective range is.   Then, we take them to the course and ask them to shoot through old ironsides at their maximum effective range.  Amazing how their maximum range shortens then.

Here's our from the club... Indiana Traditional Bowhunters

Steel deer named elvis... He sure "eats" his share of arrows... the cutout is maybe a 4" circle...

He's been known to have some arrows bounce back especially carbons...

I think he's worth an extra 10 or 15 points if you don't trash a $10.00 arrow!

Our local range has a steel doe silhouette called "The Iron Maiden". It's hilarious to watch people ruin arrows on her. I've trashed a few myself  :knothead:
