Great job Paul that is a great looking bow.

Dan Landis

Beautiful job SportHunter, I really like the way the back turned out, a natural camo.....Dan

mwosborn

Very nice looking hackberry SportHunter.  I have some hackberry and plan on making one similar - what is the width of your limbs?

Thanks!
Enjoy the hunt!  - Mitch

Great HackCurve Paul, outstanding job  :)

Thanks for all the great feedback. It means a lot coming from you guys.

Mwosborn, the finished limbs are 1 7/8" at the fades for 12" then gradual taper to 1 3/4, 1 1/2 etc. I layed out the bow blank limbs 2"  wide at the fades for 18" then tapered to tip and shaped this profile from there. The handle is 4", fades are 3", the top limb/belly fade is 3/4 to 1" longer and the bow was tillered about 3/4 to 1" above center. Handle is 1 3/4 deep, 1 1/8 center width, 1" wide at top & bottom of handle. Total length is 66" ttt & 65" ntn. Curves were bent with steam.

The tree was cut & split last August, made the rough blank a few months later then brought inside to finish drying for a few more months.

The rough bow stave had a natural set of 1/2" before tillering, the total set always returns to 1 1/4" after a breif rest. I plan on making more of this design so I'll be taking precise measurements of this before it leaves. Now I have to buy a caliper.

This is my progress so far.

But, I can tell you that I'll never use TBIII for handle risers again.

Jorgy

That is a great looking bow Sporthunter.

what happened with the tb, evil?

D

Yeah I wanna know the same thing.  I use TBIII for some risers and haven't had a problem with them.

Pat B

Its not the TBs problem. The handle area is bending. Looks like the thickness of the stave isn't enough at the handle to stay stiff when its drawn.  No glue will hold it.
You might be able to make a laminated handle with graduated lengths of wood glued together to build the riser. This type of handle has more give than a riser made from a solid piece of wood.

I finally got a chance to start over on my swap bow since the first one came out way to light.  So heres a series of pics of what I have done so far today.

Making an I-Beam riser on the band saw

Next I took all the pieces over to my "Mini" Lam grinder does what I need it to do works very well because the drill press has many different functions for me.

I wiped everything down with acetone and donned my latex gloves and spread out the butter extra thick.

Then I wrapped in saran wrap so it doesnt get so messy

Got her lined up and glued and clamped and its ready for baking

Then I just went ahead and precut a bunch of bamboo for future use and my tonkin cane veneers were dry and ready.  I think its going to be a green bow.

Now I'm back at the bandsaw to saw my core lams.  Thanks to KennyM I used my taper sleds and cut the boo cores to 0.015 over.  I cut them to 0.125 and 0.115.  Then went back to the "Mini" lam grinder and took off the final 0.010".

Lastly I got everything laid out for glue up.  I'll shape the riser for glue up tonight.  I wont be able to glue it up till Tuesday thats my next day off.   I hope to get it profiled and tip and overlays on it tuesday.

Started tillering this afternoon before the rain ran me indoors. Got nock grooves started in the tips and smoothed the edges and sides with sandpaper.
