Found a nice grained hickory board at Menards. Ripped it down to 1 1/2" widths. Going to try a hickory board bow. It has a small knot, but I put that in the middle of the bow, and plan on a non bending riser.
I learned "Semper Fi" as a Marine, and have lived it every day since.

I glued up a HBO for a guy that's just starting to be interested in bow building.

Thanks to him and you guys doing the bow swap, I now have less free time on my hands.   :bigsmyl:

Haven't built any bows in a couple years, just refinishing and fixing. I got the bug again.

Thanks guys for the info on the yew stave, there sure are a lot of rings on the top side of that limb.  Any suggestions on how to dry it, bark on or off, saw it down to rough shape, etc????Dan

Lol DVS hope you were able to adhere to the rigorous accuracy standards set forth by the state of Missouri.

Wish I could of had a day late kate's, oops I mean Nates  :)  minus the BL, but I just had to work and then had time to reduce a cherry stave to its pyramid profile and thin to 3/4" thick. Slipped it into the forced air duct work to help bring it down to the right MC a little quicker. Should be able to make a bow out of it pretty soon. Now I'm having a few beers and watching the Bud Shootout.

Day when was it cut? Are you going to try to use it for the trade? If cut fairly recent you will want to rough it out so it will cure faster.  As long as you hit the top side fairly centered it should stay fairly straight. They can warp a little while drying, but yew heat bends great so don't worry to much about that.If you can still peal the bark off then go ahead and do that rough out and seal the entire stave with a light layer of  glue or spray down with clear poly is what I will do sometimes. Yew will cure out much faster then osage or hard woods.

Ordered material to make my trade bow. Also ordered Dean's book, Hunting the Osage Bow. Better late than never. Can't afford reading material and bow material at the same time! LOL

I have a student also and he is hooked big time. He even showed up tonight with a case of cold Coors Light:) Here is Ken rasping in facets on his Osage selfbow.

While he was busy rasping I was working on another BBO Bow. Looking nice but bottom limb to the left needs a tad more work.

Dan Landis

Keenan, Thanks.  I just cut it last week and do not plan to use it right away, so I have time to let it dry.  I'll peel the bark and rough out, seal....Dan

Worked on my trad bow. Shortened it a little and brought it down to the width I wanted. Shortened up the handle to 4" and redid the fades. I did all this to keep a knot in the fades and off the limb. I got its tips moving some.

today hurt in the pocket book I had to order a new sander.  The old 6 x 48 dayton finally bit the dust.  So I ordered me a 80 inch grizzly .  I got the G0512 but it should speed things up a whole bunch.  I hope.

Chris and I worked on cutting a few bows out.  I don't like all this board building.  It's to easy to mass produce.  Boards dont have souls like staves do.  :readit:

They sure do come quick though.
Jatoba bellies and hickory backing strips.

I passed the shooting test for ccw, but just barely.    Apparently the state feels that if you own a pistol, well that just about good enough.  You have to be able to load it to.  What a joke.

CCW Blah I live in the only state without one! Thank goodness several states give out non resident permits!

Picked up a tube to mail my trade bow in, then realized the post office is closed tomorrow! Looks like it will have to wait un till Thursday now (my next day off).

Doing a rework on a bow i made for my son last year.  Got it back to shooting Friday, and we were finally able to go out and shoot for about an hour in the back yard today.  Good times   :archer2:

Now back to the garage to work down the stave for my trade bow!   :D
