The Paradise - The Last Stand......
« on: May 26, 2008, 08:20:00 PM »
Please bare with me, and I am covered up with emails, the auction, Hope and Faith coming in, and  Hope and Faith going out, and the death of close friend of the family.  I'll try and update this hunt the best that I can........

Got to The Paradise Friday evening just in time to stalk a loan boar in the White Oak food plot...got wet up to my knees right out of the chute...but it didn't work out. It was what the doctor ordered though...got me settled in, and my spirits high for the weekend.

Saturday morning I went on a milk run, and rounded the bend at the west end of the garden(named food plot) only to find it teaming with hogs...and some dandies.

There was one that stood tall, head and shoulders above all the rest. I moved on em up and down the wooded edge and back again. I just couldn't get that big one in range and turned right. It was a bit misty, and there was something about that big one that just looked peculiar, but I didn't give it much thought. But I did notice that he had some serious rake marks and some armor plating.

It was an exciting half hour or so, as there was a sow in heat, and the boys were pitchin all sorts of fits. Growling, squealing, butting, and even a few got tossed around a bit. What a show.

I think one of them got a whiff of me finally, and they made off heading east paralleling a slough. I made a bee line to flank them in an area about 200 yards away, hoping they would tell on themselves again, and I'd have another go at them....

It worked, but didn't work. I cut em off alright, but they all, bout 17 of them waltzed and cussed right by me no more than 20 yards away, but it was so thick I never saw hide nor hair.

I figured with the sow in heat I might hear this bunch again in the afternoon and have another chance at that beast with the coat of armor.

So, I went in for lunch, and to get a bigger bow.....

Seriously.....I traded in my 64# MOAB for my 70# MOAB, and switched out my Saquatch for an Ace Super Express....and honed it proper.  I now had more horse power, and an arrow just shy of 600 grains.

I set out again, and just as I went and checked the empty garden, the winds picked up something fierce, and dead trees and branches started falling all around within ear shot.  Thunder was in the close distance, so I headed back to the truck an drove to the Big Sandy(named food plot) to make sure my truck didn't get tree fallen.  Greg Clark had the same idea as he was already there.  It was just me and Greg in camp this weekend.

After the storm passed, we split up to carry out our plans....and the hogs were already in the garden.  The ruckus had started without me, but what more could I ask?........

Here we go again....positioning and re-positioning...over and over, trying to get an arrow in the biggest one of the lot...but I started to notice the peculiar look of the one I wanted.

This cat and mouse went on and on, till it was all about to happen it seemed.  He was in range and all he had to to was turn...he quartered to me, and back facing me, and I started to take in all the features of this boar.  The best way to describe him was that all the others seemed to have clean clear cut defining lines, and he seemed to be out of focus.  Yeah, that's it, he was out of focus. He had serious rake marks all along his armor, bare spots all along, hair missing from his face, tan rings around his eyes, big fuzzy jowls, and a tall bristly ridge running down his back.....the guy was a wreck let me tell ya...but a brute none the less.  He was a true battle axe, and he was 20 yards from me for TEN MINUTES and no shot was offered!!!  When on rare occasion he turned broadside, he was flanked by the lesser ones blocking a clean shot.

It seemed like eternity that I was settin on ready....all the time with smaller hogs within 12 yards of me.  I was hiding in plain sight the whole time, standing between two saplings with not a big tree around and zero back ground cover.

When they finally got a puff of me, the herd scurried off, and now *I* was a wreck.  With 30 minutes of hunting left at least...I packed it in for some reconnaissance of the morning hunt to come.....
