It's all about the string angle Smoke.
Ideally you would want to hit the maximum leverage angle at just a hair over draw length. A bow that is tillered to have this happen at 29"  will be too long for your 27.5" draw. She'll still shoot a respectable arrow just not optimally.
Will the difference be night and day? it depends whether or not that that bow is tillered for 29" or just mearly "weighed" at 29"

Hey Smoke....
I spent some time on the phone with Jason the other day. Definitely eased my thoughts and worries. I had the same question on a bow and tillering.  Seriously I would just call Hill Archery yourself. It really is no worries, I called gave them the serial number of the Bow I was looking to purchase and they gave me a great history of the bow and could tell me, by serial number, what the bow was capable of. So in the end, I picked up a 70" Wesley that was marked 58# @27... I have a 68" Wesley marked 55# @ 28... I was very worried about the Tiler of the bow and making sure of the same thing... who would get a 70" AMO bow if it was only for a 27" draw anyway? it was just a marking, and I am pulling quite a bit further than the Hill was marked at 29.5" so I was kinda worried... but that 70" sounded like it should be better... mostly I wanted the locator grip. They assured me that with the Production bow as it was, I am perfectly safe to go out to 30 if needed.  I definitely appreciated the insight and truly enjoyed the time talking with the shop and getting the background on the bow.... Just food for thought, Will sooth the soul and make you want the bow that much more.
My two cents.
Shootz!

Smoke......swampthing has it right....string angle or limb bend at full draw is important...that helps create the sweetspot and for your draw i would say 66" in one of Craig's bows.

Tony.....wow my friend... :)

David Yukon

So if I draw 30" on my r/d longbow, what length Hill style bow do I need? And would the bowyer tiller the bow to my draw length or to 28"?
Thank you.

Talked about this with Craig last year and he told me no.

Yukon...with a straight grip hillstyle your draw will probably go down to 28-29" and that would match up with most bowyers for a 68" bow.  A custom bowyer will tiller the bow to your draw.  David miller or Steve Turay or Frank SanMarco will do it.  Craig's bows are more standardized.

Tony..I reread your poem....that is one swell piece of literature.  Men have been extolling the virtues of longbows in a feminine  way for centuries...it's all part of the magic.. ;)

Tony-
your poem is beautiful! Thank you!

Rik-
Stanley basin is breathtaking. I posted this link and the NALS info on a German TradArchery forum and the response was overwhelming....

Darren-
pls put me on the list for the Georgia HogHunt 2012. PM sent.

My draw shortened from 31" r/d longbow to 30" when shooting my Jerry Hill. And I think it will get even shorter by 0.5" when I get this "bend-arm-thing" right...
Jerry Hill - Stalker deluxe 69" 56@29.5
Osage Selfbow - 66" 53@29.5

Here is a photo of Hill that really shows in the pre-draw moments what John Schulz talks about "keep that pinky back".  That has helped me alot with my hookup on the string.  Keep the pinky back and cock the thumb, like you a cocking the trigger on a .45 Colt as you come up to draw.  Food for thought.

dragonheart  Thanks for posting the picture.

It seems to fit right in there with Tony's poem.

I'm going to figure out how to put them together.

Tony's poem

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Sun will rise one day:

Her bones from the East
Her soul from the West
Her maker, her father,
Her god does his best

He sees her, he knows her
His hands will not rest
Till her shape and her form
Are gracefully blessed

He burns her with fire
With heat he does make
Her will to submit
To his passionate bake.

He shapes her and chafes her
From history he forms
Tradition, the old way
The hard way she's born.

Many men seek her
Few of them find
Most of them clueless
Some even blind

Her virtue is soft
And graceful her lines
Only one man will hold her
She waits in no line

With whispers she greets them
With silence she sings
With blood they respond
Confusion she brings

Her master, her brother
His heart is on wings
He waits for her coming
and together they fling

The sun is undone
The day is diminished
The hunt has been won
The victory finished

The string has been dropped
The beast has made flight
The heart has been stopped
No matter his might

She has finished her job
And bent to his will
Together they go
There's no greater thrill

They made music together
Combined stillness with will
Their quarry laid still
On the side of the hill

I was correct... just like biscuits and gravy!

Gods greatest command:  Love your neighbor as you love yourself.

A bamboo 64" about 55pounds at 26" McDonald longbow and a 61#@28" 68" Pete George Yew with clear glass were dropped off at my house. What in the world am suppose to do with two more longbows.  That McDonald is really soft in the hand, but that yew Timberline is  as well even with a B50 string. These are both bows that I bought years ago. Oh well, they don't eat much, I guess they can stay.

Mudd

Pavan if you run out of space for bows of that caliber I'll volunteer to hold onto them for you but only if the poundage is less...lol

I try to help where I can..lol

It does not take a lot of muscle to look at a wall of heavy longbows, but they do need to be taken out to play every now and then.
