Question of the Day....

In 1937 Michigan held its first special Bow and Arrow only deer season from November 1-14. The 1937 license cost $2.25 and permitted a bowman to take one bear and one male deer with antlers extending not less than three inches above the skull.

On November 6, 1937 William VanVorst of Lowell, Michigan took the first deer of this special season with a single arrow.

The 1937 photographs of VanVorst with his deer, the bow, the arrow, the broadhead, the antlers, license, back tag and shipping coupon have survived and are pictured below...

Question of the day....

Can you name any item that VanVorst used for that first hunting season in 1937 that is identical to the one you will use during the 2010 hunting season  ???

TRAP

I have some wool underwear (red) that I'll be weaaring come November on those brisk mornings.  Does that count?

How have you been Wade?  Hey, I have a pic I want you to see.  It's trapped in my iphone but I'll figure out a way to send it.

I'll be wearing my L.L. Bean Maine Hunting boots, Filson wool, and "Fruit of the Loom" undies.  ;)

Trap - Don't know if your red underwear is identical to VanVorst's as I don't have his underwear so we could compare. I'm sure his didn't have a label "Made in China".

Been keeping fine, except just too busy. Looking forward to seeing your iphone image. Is it a Grumley Bow?

Lon - VanVorst's boots look like LL Bean's, but all the things he wrote, seemed to be about hunting, rather than today's frequent writing style of product endorsements. Filson shirt, maybe, Fruit of Looms, I don't know about that one.

69RECURVE

Is that an old Zwickey broadhead?

"Identical" Hmmm, that'll be hard.  Many similar items though.

I would think it would have to be something about him not so much his equipment . even the slightest advancements in technology have changed the make up of things like the string ,  nocks, feathers, arrows etc.
I'm going to guess ,,,,,,,,, his drive or determination

Wade Phillips

69RECURVE – The broadhead is one of VanVorst's. It is a cool head, only five are known to the entire collecting community. VanVorst's head actually pre-dates the 1939 Barbed Zwickey by a couple of years.

doug77 – Yes, hopefully we all have hunting licenses, but none will probably be identical to VanVorst's 1937 Michigan #262.

Doc – Your bald spots may be similar, but probably not identical.

jcar315 – Yes, we'll all have a bowsting or two, but probably not identical to VanVorst's.

myshootinstinks – Yes, identical. Could be tough to think of even though in this thread I have already made reference to it.

huntnfool62 – Good guess, we all have drive and determination, but this is not something that is an emotion.

I'll bet nearly all of you have looked at yours or thought about it today, probably more than once, maybe even talked about it, and never even made the connection.

my second guess, how about a bow.

Doug -

Yes we will all have a bow, but probably not many of us will have a self yew bow that resembles VanVorst's and not many will have one that we made ourselves.

Wade Phillips

Archer Fanatic - Good guess, hopefully we will all be using cut on contact broadheads, but it's doubtful that any will be identical to VanVorst's unique heads.

I would guess the plastic nocks.I don't know when they were first used but 1937 would be pretty early.

You are the winner....

You must do your best thinking at at 3:44 AM (but not your best spelling)    ;)

The 1937 and 2010 Calendars are identical...

Every day of each week and month has the same date both years.

Every bowman uses some type of calendar for hunting season.

Your prize...

A 1937 & 2010 Calendar

Although every day of each week and month has the same date for both years, the moon phases are different between the two years so I used the 2010 moon phases...
