A Traditional bow hunter wanna be.

I think I'm about like a Hugh amount of the members here. I have hunted whitetail 35 years now. Had really good luck and harvest a large amount of whitetail. With the other methods, longgun,muzzleloader, handguns, and wheeled bows.

I had messed around with traditional bows for around 20 years. Never took them serious, although had a lot of fun shooting them. I just could not give up the wheels until 3 years ago. I just was not having any fun shooting the wheels.

Three years ago I made a commitment to myself, shoot only traditional bows. What great time I have had these last three years! I'm so sorry I did not do it before. Not that there has not been some disappointment all my doing. Some of them looked like this, clean and bloodless.

Shooting over deer seems to be our downfall, of course shooting under won't help out either!
Persistence and a bull dog attitude will prevail, if ya just don't give up!

And things will start to turn around, like hey that arrow went clean through. And is covered in blood!! Small wonders :D

Sunday evening I went into my stand, only squirrels appeared until just before dark. I see a deer moving though the wood in front of me. It turns out to be a small buck, has just a little head gear. He monkeys around off on my right side. And finally works across the front of my stand from right to left. Offering no shot at 25 yards because of the brush, 22 yards would have been a different story. His mistake was cutting on a angle that brought him through a clearing. And in my shooting range! When he gets almost all the way into the clearing, I baa at him and he stops. Now you know where my first arrow went

yup right over the back! :(

He takes off like a rocket, but I immediately baa and grunt at him. And lo and behold here he comes back. Off on my left side, finally works around broadside at about 17 yards. All those things flying though your brain, bend at the waist, PICK A SPOT!

The string slips from my anchor, and the arrow disappears into the spot I had focused upon. It all looks so good!
The buck rockets again out of there, and I baa and grunt at him on his way. He stops out about 40 yards, I can just see him through the trees. He finally disappears, and I descend down. I go over where he was last standing by a tree I had referenced. And yes indeed there is blood, but not near as much as I had suspected or hope for. :(
And think he was also Jason! Until!!

After inspecting the blood trail for around 25 yards and not seeing any froth in the blood. I was suspect of a liver hit, So I went back to where the shot acured. Lo and behold there was my arrow covered in the red stuff! But still no froth on it but best of all no bad green slime or smell. So I decide to wait until morning. Liver shot deer usually lay down very shortly but at times take a hour or so to expire. So I did what my brain said and waited til morning. Hoping the coyotes did not find him first.

The night was nice and cold around 34 degrees so he would be alright overnight. Monday morning found there at day light, I did not even have to track him. He traveled around 80 yards and piled up!
However my worst fear had occured

The coyotes had found him, they munched on just a little of the back hind quarter but not much. They did however clean one side of the rib cage. Bummer but I still had over half a deer worth of meat.

Man that sucks about the coyotes!! We might need to get together and do some yote hunting here soon. I have seen quite a bit of sign out where I hunt south of Hamilton... more than in past years!!

The only other animal I had harvested was a goat on the Texas Sweat hunt 07. Which my friend robtatto hand forged a blade for and used one of the horns from my goat and is it sweet!

And now properly broke in! :D

Not to mention the BW PGA my wife bought for me has done its job!

Sorry to hear about the yotes. I had the same thing happen last week with a doe and like you was able to salvage some meat. Congrats on breaking in the bow and knife.

Way to go! Glad to see that PGA is working out for you. Mine has taken 2 nice does already.
