making your own Trade points.

Do any of you guys make your own  hunting heads?  Do you make flint points or metal?  I'm really interested in making my own out of metal.  

What do you make yours out of?  Size? Dimensions?  How do you haft them?  Pics and pointers appreciated.

I have made some out of a large band saw blade.  I made them single bevel and honed them razor sharp.  I only shot one deer with them.  It got the job done.  I think the side notches hurt the penetration.  Next time I will not have them. I mounted the point with pine pitch glue and wrapped them with heavy duty thread soaked in superglue.  It held firm even after going through bone.  

 


I have also used a stone point that a friend made for me.  It was hafted the same way.

This one is pinned but it could also be tied on through the holes. It's made out of 1085 spring steel which is pretty common.  The other is an unusual arrowhead I found while dragging the deer out of the woods.

This is a simple design that has a stem and the holes allow for wrapping a little higher .
You need to realize that there's not much side to side force on the head , mostly straight on .

Yes, I will have a stem at the base that I can insert into a slot in the shaft and wrap with thread or sinew.

I would find a metal shop with a CNC machine and have them cut you out a bunch at once.

Took some trial and error but worked great, how about a four blade?  Old saw blade and weighed 145g





 Both blades are slotted and lock together making it like a one piece head. Epoxied and sinew wrapped

Use car keys.  They make super small game broadheads.  Newer plastic electric ones do not work. The centerline of the key is marked, foot the wooden shaft with the proper aluminum shaft.  Glue. When dry keep centerline in sight and single edge grind of file a point.  Rabbits hate them as they thump and cut.
