Thanks guys!!

I envy your back yard Ray. That is some beautiful country!!

Mudd come on over to the bench and take a crack at it yourself, Never thought I could do it until I did it (first bow was in August 2010)?

Stiks is one of my many teachers. Great bunch of folks and all the help a guy could ask for.

Mudd, Hawkeye, Ray Lena make a great bow model...  beats the heck out of lookin at me  ;)

How much does it cost to build a hill style bow from scratch? I barely have any wood working tools and I have no idea what I'm doing, though I'm pretty decent working with my hands and I pick up things quickly. I would just have to spend some time on it. I'm just curious since someday I would like to make one.

If you post this over on the Bowyers Bench you will be flooded with answers and help. My bow is a selfbow (stave or split log one piece of wood)
and all you need are some hand tools (draw knife, rasps, files, scrapers)... Stiks bow is a bit more complex but it still doesn't require a big investment. Costs much less than buying a custom built and once you're set up, you're set up!!

Good luck  :)

I'd really like to make a laminated glass bow in the Hill style at some point, but I'm willing to start smaller if I have to. I'll check out the bench.

Weekend project complete.

Beavertail leather's not too bad.

Not too bad at all.

How thick is that stuff, Rik? I really like the way it looks, but I don't like to add bulk to my risers if I can avoid it.

Rik
It came out great!  It looks like it would feel real good, you should get many years of wear from that grip.

Rik- the beaver grip looks really good on that Hill.  I re-gripped my new Big Five this weekend also.  Took "Lady Ebony" out pig hunting.

If you want to see a Howard Hill Wesley Special in action against moose and black bear, get ahold of the "Wild Traditions" DVD from Centaur Archery. The moose hunt footage is pretty cool!

I really like the look of the black glass an the ebony.  It blends.  You have to be in the bright sun to tell where the wood ends and the glass begins.

I have a special bow coming to Texas.
