Ross-

That bow looks outstanding! I like the fact that there's no lam up the riser, and the entire snake wood riser is exposed. When you have a riser wood that is that beautiful, I wouldn't want to hide it under the lams.

Congrats,
Darren

Thanks Darren, I took a good long time to decide on the specs I wanted for this bow and I figured if I was gonna shell out for the snakewood I might as well show off as much of it as possible.

Question on Grip sizes on your hills... what do you consider a good grip size?

I had a tembo that measured 5 3/8 at the bottom and 5 1/8 at the smallest part of the locator (thanks scrub_buck for the measurements). I found this grip to be too small at the locator, and I prefer a straight grip anyway. So I traded it away.

Now I'm looking at some other hills and comparing them to ones that I have shot. My brother and dad have hills and both of their grips are much closer to 6 inches in circumference thank to 5. I like the larger grips, but I don't know if I need to go that big as both of them have larger hands than I do. The one hill I'm looking at has a straight grip with 5 3/8 circumference.

All that to say, what grip sizes do you prefer and why. It would be nice to compare them with glove sizes just to keep them relative to something we all know.

Craig will basicly make a grip tp your specs....
My grip is slightly dished 1/8 deep and the overall grip is based on the small take down model....
Theres an arrow maker near Craig that I cant remember his name right now, but I held his bow once at a shoot....
So when I order my bow, i mentioned it to Craig that I liked that grip size but I wanted it dished as mentioned above....
Craig said no problem, and thats how I got my grip size....

I have a copy of "Hittem like Howard Hill" and yes it is a great book, as well as hard to come by, but worth it if you find it.

Handle Mine is like 5 1/2", I like a little bigger grip.  Think my next bow Nate or Craig makes for me will have a bigger grip to get my pads on the front of the bow more.  My theory is that will help MY hand bones line up better, and have less chance of torque, kinda locks wrist in.

Don't know if this one counts but???

Here's my crack at a Hill style selfbow from a Yew stave. I just finished this one for my wife. She has never shot a bow so we need to work on her form a bit. No R/D here the stave had a mind of its own? The stave started with a tiny bit of deflex and the bow still has it. I think it makes it more user friendly especially for a newbie     :)

Thanks toddster and mike. I'm hoping to get a bunch of input to see where most people get theirs made. It seems that his stock bows are all smaller than 5.5

I think when talking grip size you need to be talking riser depth and then width, not total circumference.  My Tembo has a grip circumference of 5 1/2 at the shelf and so does my son's Northern Mist Classic.  The Classic has a 2" deep riser from back to belly and the Tembo has a 1 3/4" deep riser.  The Classic feels larger and fits my fingers better front to back.  The Tembo fills more into the palm but feels short on the fingers. Same circumference but a very different feeling grip between the two.

Since Schulz's book is no longer available, would David Miller's "Shooting The American Semi-Long" do?

What subjects does the book cover and how would you rate this book?

Thanks.

X2, I would also measure the depth and width. John Lee and John Schulz both said that a Hill bow should be 2 1/8 deep.

I like mine 2 1/8 deep and 1 " wide.

I agree with Molson.

The width and depth of a handle/grip means a heck of a lot more to me that just knowing the circumference.
