grouse outfitters....now that's funny right there       grouse are where you find 'em for sure.....

I love to small game hunt....if I lived back east I'd sure be a squirrel huntin' fool...(like Tom M.)  but small game can sure liven up a dull day... :)

bring on the huntin' season....not too much longer now..

This is another bow that I bought on the classifieds hear several years back it was 66'' long take-down I sent it back to Craig and had it cut down to 64'' had him put tip overlays on and a sterling silver turkey inlay. A 64'' take-down will fit in my suitcase.   :bigsmyl:  .....stabow

please post images no wider than 640 - it's easy to have photobucket do this for ya automatically -  how to autosize photobucket images  - thanx!

Anyone hunt rabbits with their Hill style bows. Here's a couple taken with my 83# zebra bow around 1980

Fast forward 30 years, another rabbit hunt with my 46#  Northern Mist Shelton.

Glad the string is good Pat! I am liking the Robin Hood! Double shelf is so cool!

Ron! That is almost 1/2 the bow weight! Lol. Nice shooting on rabbits.  If I have my draw wt decrease like that, I will be into about 23# longbows...is that enough for elk?? 83#..sheesh

MikeNova

Ron isn't that 83# bow a little light for rabbits?

QuoteRon isn't that 83# bow a little light for rabbits?
It wasn't back then, it was the lightest bow that I had and was my target bow as well as my rabbit bow. My main hunting bows were an 85# Big 5 and a 90# by Bryon Prigon. My workout bows were 104# and 125#. That's why my shoulders today sound like someone walking on a gravel road when I shoot...

Ron,

I remember Bryon Pridgon....he lived in our neck of the woods...I had one of his personal longbows...he was a lefty so I converted it to a double shelf.  Osage with about 1 1/2" of backset...can we say 76# of thump?  You don't hear about him anymore...he was a character for sure.

Looper

I took a few cottontails this past season with my Halfbreed.  We've got a bumper crop of them this year, so I'm really looking forward to the small game season starting.

I used to have basset hounds for rabbits, my best one could retrieve ducks off water and pointed pheasants.  She got hit by a car running a rabbit. Rabbit hunting with a longbow is more fun than deer hunting.  I talked to my wife about getting a rabbit dog and she says "no way, with the economy what it is no more dogs and no more bows. The kids will need help."  All I want to do is go canoeing now and come September, I am going after the bunnies and squirrels, my good old cocker is really good at flushing and hassling squirrels, but he is too old to hunt anymore.  I am still going and I will take the dog and let him just tag along.

A day afield with a longbow , quiver full of blunts and sharps and a dog at my heels ?

The 90# bow that Bryon made for me was made out of osage. It kicked like a mule but I didn't mind ...until I got tennis elbow so bad that I couldn't bend my arm to scratch my nose without extreme pain..   :scared: ...I sold that bow. Here's a bow that Bryon made for me,..bamboo, white glass, 82#. It was a great shooter.

Unfortunately it's life span was limited..   :(  I might make another walking stick out of it..   ;)

Pridgon Mountain Longbows if I recall correctly...  that was a pretty bow...too bad on about the delam...

last I heard,  Brian had gotten completely out of archery due to heartbreak from wounding a few animals,  moved to Texas and was building windsurfing stuff....

Ron LaClair

Too bad, he had a real talent. I think he told me once that he got his smooth finish on his bows from using pumice..    :dunno:

JCJ

Pumice and then Rhottenstone applied with a felt pad soaked in mineral oil makes a nice slurry for polishing certain finishes. 3M Perfect-It and Finesse-It clear coat auto polishes even work better. I use them to put a soft luster on the cane rods I build that are finished with Spar varnish.

Shinken

That's a good tip on the spar varnish finish JCJ!

Hunt them - yes.  Kill them - occasionally.   :D
