You really haven't hunted the old fashion way until you've done it from one of these Indian houses.(The Tipi) "Glenn ST. Charles"

I have been following this thread for a couple of weeks now and have enjoyed all the information and photos. There are some talented bowyers out there.   :clapper:

Perhaps , so that people can see that we Aussies lead the way , that you posted some of yours up mate !
For those that don't know ... "Aussie Stickbow Hunter" is one of the good guys ! And a tremendous help to us longbow shooters here in Oz .
Makes a darn fine bow too ! In fact I just bought one of his much sought after bows today ! Pics coming.

G'day Jeff! Yet another left-handed longbow ace!

Some trivia: The bow that the Good Doctor (Ed Ashby) holds with that buffy-loo in one of the ads here on TradGang and in TBM was built by none-other than Aussie Stickbow Hunter, Jeff Challacombe.

I must confess to my fellow Hill bow enthusiast that I broke down and made a batch of carbon arrows. I have made a couple dozen cedar arrows and a dozen cane shafts but I can't seem to get any to fly like the cedar shafts I used for the last year or so. Unfortunately those shafts are about gone so I have been struggling to find the right arrow. A couple people asked me if I tried carbon. Well I finally did and I gotta say they fly great.

Ben, Ben & Dodger, you sometimes speak too much.    :)

I have shot Hill Style bows since 1984 but have only ever had one Howard Hill bow which was a 70# 'Big Five' and I shot that during 1986 & 1987 and took quite a bit of game with it. I will see if I can work out how to post a few photos of game taken with it.

A feral goat 1986

A boar 1987

Another young boar 1987

I'll see if those photos are attached and then I might post some more.

Jeff

Okie man

Nice pics! You are deadly with that Big 5. Are all Aussies left handed?
When the moment of truth arrives, the time for preparation has passed

Aussie Stickbow Hunter

Thanks Okie man. There are a few of us left handers but we are very much outnumbered by those other handers.   :biglaugh:

I started making my own Hill style longbows in 1987 and have shot them ever since. As the two Ben's have no doubt shown, other than the dingo, we only have feral animals to hunt in Australia. These include pigs, goats, five species of deer, rabbits, fox and some others. Pigs and goats are probably the most common ferals hunted.

I don't have a lot of photos on my computer but here are few more recent photos of game taken with Hill style bows.

The result of a weeks hunt in north Queensland for pigs; three longbows and a ring in.

A boar taken with one of my longbows - 66# Bamboo with clear glass.

Another boar taken in western Queensland - 59# bamboo with clear glass.

A sow taken with my 59# longbow.

Hope you enjoy seeing these.

Ben Maher asked me to post up the photos but I think this lot will do it.

Just released an arra at a young meat buff.

The calf made it out of the water before dropping. It provided some very nice meals.

Over the years I have been blessed to share a campfire with some really great people. Here are some photos of a few of them who used Hill style longbows.

My mate Greg and his son; a top bloke with a good boar.

Strowy, one excellent Bowhunter.

Rod, he makes his own Hill style longbows and is a great mate.

Keith, he started making his own Hill style longbows last year.

This photo is a lot of years old now but this is my beautiful wife of over thirty years - a billy taken with her 35# bamboo longbow.

Well that will do from me. I hope you have enjoyed seeing some photos from down here.

Oh yeah, I LOVE  shooting Hill style longbows.   :goldtooth:

Mudd

I have to hand it to you "down-under" lads, you do seem to know how to use your stick&strings to produce the meat.

Thanks for sharing with us.

  :archer:

PS: I think you have the building of Hill style bow figured out also.   :archer2:

Not so fast, Jeff. Show the chaps the bows you've made. Following which, you may take me to task.   :p      ;)

Rob DiStefano

thanx for all the great images, jeff - added a bunch to the slide show!   :wavey:

Sorry, it wouldn't let me post this photo above (too many in one post).

This is my son Jay when he was just on five years old; he is 27 now. I shot this goat for the camp oven and he was with me and all the talk was how he helped dad get our roast dinner. His bow was a 12# Hill style longbow  :)

Jeff

Just awesome Jeff !
There is quite a bit of fine Aussie hunting talent in some of those photo's .

As one can tell , by and large we Aussies have an absolute addiction to top end , expensive designer camo ...
And beards ...........

Thank you Mudd and Rob.

Dodger, I feel like I have already posted too much mate but on your insistence I will post some photos of a few of the bows I have made.

A couple of Red Elm bows and a Bamboo one on top.

Red Elm bow.

A couple more Red Elm bows.

A tip from the top bow in the photo above this one.

The 70# Bamboo bow I shot the buff calf with.

A 68" longbow

A few bows I made some years ago now.

Well Dodger that is about all the bow photos I could get my hands on easily.

That will most certainly be enough photos from me now. I look forward to more from others.
