Yeah, I double serve now.  I tried padding that area but the padding gets twisted and looks bad. Dental floss seems reasonable, but I don't know if 10 strand to 8 strand or so will make any noticeable difference.

Rob DiStefano

i find a noticeable difference with 8 strands of dyneema.  i've tested down to 4 strands, but that was just too scary little for me.  6 strands works quite nicely, but 8 strands of dyneema'02 is that magic "goldilocks mama bear" strand count for me.  all this assumes an hmpe fiber that's comparable in diameter to dacron b50 or b500, and in excess of 100# tensile strength per strand.  even if it was only 100#/strand, an 8 strand string will handle an 800# load, which is waaaaay more than need be for a 50-60# stick bow.  ;)

Ok. I wanted to post a picture of my the bow rack I just made with my 4 Hill style bows. The rack is red oak with 2016 arrow shaft scraps as pegs.

They are from left to right: 70" 55# Martin ML-10, 68" 50# Howard Hill Big Five, 66" 52# Mauna Kea (made by me!) takedown, 64" 52# Mauna Kea takedown.

Here they are strung up.

Rob's right ... I do like a Hill bow collection ... but I love a Left handed Hill style bow collection ...

I think we need more info on the"Mauna Kea takedown"... has it seen the demise of any critters , stumps or pine cones ?

Ben I think if you got up on this side of the equator you would be right handed. So you probably ought to order a right handed 66" HH Tembo for when you visit the US to hunt elk. Just have them send it to me and I will have it ready to go for you. Let me know where you hunting and I'll ship for you. See, there is a solution to every problem. You just have to think outside the box.

Nice! I've got some projects in the works right now too. A backstop, and a Hill bow rack!  Wish I had a drill press.  Think a 3D deer stand is on the list too.

Rik

Hi Guys,

I received my new Arrowmaster Quiver. If any of you are interested in an outstanding hunting quiver, I have a review and photos in the Arrowmaster thread. This baby is going to work!

Here you go, Ben.

The bows are named Mauna Kea after the mountain where I live and hunt.

The lower limbs say Pu'u Holoholo, "traveling hill" in Hawaiian.

Living on an island, the 2 piece takedown makes it easier to take the bows to other islands or the mainland.

Both bows are 52# @ 28." Both use black glass on the back and clear glass on the belly.

I made the 64" in April, and it has been stumping, hunting, target shooting, bowfishing, and in a 3d tournament. It has 4 lams of bamboo with a riser of milo, a Hawaiian wood that was used in canoe making.

The 66" was completed on Friday. It has 3 lams of bamboo with a riser of koa.

I also put koa overlays on the limb tips.

Many thanks to Captain Dick Wightman for all of his help through his site and in emails.

Beautiful bows! I love how you incorporated local woods.

Those are real beauties. Are those your first longbows?

Yes. Those are the first laminated bows I've made. I made a few selfbows and board bows prior to making these. I wanted to be able to make bows out of woods my ancestors worked with for both the tradition and the mana, the spiritual force, of those woods.

Great job.  I was thinking of looking into making one but don't really have a grasp of tillering.  I should probably start with a board bow and see if I have the talent to go further. Those are beautiful bows.  There is something about the curve of a braced Hill style bow that stirs my blood.

Those Mauna Kea longbows are beautiful and the shelf is even on the correct side!

That Koa wood is *awesome*!

Enjoy!

Good review, Rik and it fits handsomely with your outfit.  I knew you would like it.

The hunt is only 30 days away unless you are chasing antelope.  I scouted some of those speed goats today on the East side of the Sawtooths.  15 days and counting!

Very nice craftsmanship, Al.  The colors work well together and a take-down - oh yeah!  That is on my list.
