Yes Sir, on the ground. I like the Gloss. I was never one for waving the bow around to create special effects with the shine. Gonna have to venture on over to a bedding ground next week. Now that the season is fully open, doe or buck, and my freezer is looking kind of spacious, anything older than 2 is fair game for me.

Not to change the subject.......well I guess I am, I was told by an experienced Howard Hill shooter that the straight grip is offered in more than one variation. I'm not talking about dished or locater. In the bow he had, the grip had a wider profile which I prefer vs the the narrower version on the belly side. Is this the case and if so is there a name or style number that is referred to?

You can even have an asymmetrical straight grip, that is what I prefer at least for own bows.

Nate Steen .

my favorite grip is the teardrop....a slightly fatter version of the old 50s style hatchet head grip.  The teardrop grip looks just like that...narrower on the belly so it locates well.  but straight (or maybe 1/16" dish) from top to bottom

Smoke-

There's only straight, dished, and locator grips. I had this talk with Craig Ekin and he went with a more fuller grip on the side because it was more comfortable. Spend some time looking at Hill bows made by different bowyers throughout the years, and you will see that there's some variation between the fullness of the grip's sides.

You mentioned wax on your bow; have you tried Renaissance wax?

Darren.....what's that?  I use paste wax and buff it....

Nate-

Renaissance wax was developed in Europe and is used exclusively in all of there museums to protect metal swords, wood, it can even be placed over paper, preventing it from turning colors. It's used in the Smithsoian musuems as well. It's stronger than natural waxes, because it's a synthetic wax. Look it up it's good stuff.

I'm particually fond of my high gloss Hill. The finish seems to be tougher than a satin finish.

yeah, it's well known that gloss varnish is much stronger than satin...the fillers needed to dull down the varnish also make it soft.  you can dull down a gloss finish with steel wool.....

if you hunt with the wind in your face, the sun at your back, the animals have a hard time seeing the sun shine on a glossy bow when you are shooting.....and carrying the bow with the belly side up means you are shining toward the sky....
