Nate Steen .

Rik,

I always thought you made your own arrows, and now I see the proof that HH Archery has been making them all along....you sly dog...camoflaging your arrows in a bow box...  ;)

Ben Maher

Ha ha .... nicely played Nate !

Ben ... yep $170 to Melbourne . Widow does it for $90 as of a couple of months ago .

Allan Boice at Liberty does the best shipping price around to Oz ... maybe I should order another English to find out lol.....

Rik ... dude ... c'mon ... if they ain't arrows in that box then you are surely hiding something .
Lemme guess ...
its your new osage 62" 40# @ 28 " Hill ?   :bigsmyl:

Nate Steen .

good one Ben,

chuckled at that one....he he he

Nate Steen .

Fellas,  it's a good thing Rik doesn't have too many other outdoor pursuits except hunting elk with longbows or he'd never have enough time to work or talk to his wife...

me,  I'm trying to figure out how to hunt antelope, deer, elk, and bear in a 6 week span...I'm glad I use a backquiver, so I have enough arrows to cover any situation.....even if the grouse show up....  :)

Okie man

I'm not really familiar with grouse.  I don't see any flu flu's in that quiver. Do you get those on the ground or are you just that good?

I would guess that was a little ground swattn.

Nate Steen .

flu flu's...what're those?   out here, fool hens tend to jump into the nearest tree and you shoot 'em like a squirrel.

I have been known to disrupt an elk stalk to shoot any unsuspecting grouse that show up....and then commence the elk stalk...you need quiet arrows to shoot grouse when the elk are right over the hill.  Flu flu's are too noisy for such foolishness, but cooked grouse at elk camp are as good as it gets for dinner fare....

He's that good!  Don't ever challege Nate to anything, including shooting his longbow.   :archer2:    :D

The idea of grouse hunting whilst chasin' elk , with my straight limb bow and a back quiver full of woodies  ... heck yeah its my kinda stuff !
Its the classic , "Schulz, birds, bowstring" pictures that gets me thinking about airfares and the Rockies
I am ordering myself a new bow ...
A t/d ... airline friendly ...

But you do know Nate that it is not actually possible to take game without camo don't you ... so whatever you are playing at by posting those pics ..... sheesh .....

Note to self
*Stop pot stirring    :saywhat:
*Be nice to Nate ... for when he takes me chasing grouse
*Be mean to Rik for holdin' out on his mates    :biglaugh:

Nate---------EXCELLENT PHOTO! Mighty fine shooting too!

For those of you who don't hunt elk, I need to explain that perhaps the best part of elk hunting is that Idaho elk live in great grouse country, and grouse are the table fare of the Gods.

Many is the time I have been working in on a bugling bull and ran into a covey of grouse. I always put the elk on hold and go after the grouse. Then when the shooting is over and the feathers have settled, I go back after the bull.

What you see in Nate's photo above is just one of the things that makes elk country so much fun to be in. Especially with a bow. Chances are Nate was into elk shortly before or shortly after he bagged those tasty grouse!

Oh, I almost forgot, I received a package today, and upon closer inspection, I discovered it was from Howard Hill Archery.

I was pretty sure it was a box of arrows mailed to me by mistake. . . but when I picked it up, it felt like it weighed right around 75 pounds. That was certainly interesting. Perhaps I should open the box?

Oh BABY!

Yes, your intuition is correct----Rik got the Hill Bug! It's all Nate's fault really, he made me a beautiful bow, a killer bow, but he made it too pretty. It made my two spray-painted Hill bows look like, well, spray-pinted Hill bows. As time wore on, I began to realize that it needed a matching bow from Howard Hill Archery, one that I could take along on fly-in trips as a backup  to my Sunset Hill that would look as nice as it does.

That's where you guys came in---you are all bad, BAD influences, because the Hill Bug bit deep and wouldn't let go, and you guys just kept making it worse with all your great photos and stories.

I felt the urge to hunt with the same kind of bow Howard hunted with, and so, somehow, a Big Five worked it's way into my soul.

I went to a wood distributor and went through 25 to 30 pieces of Bocote until I found one that was just right, one light enough to match the darkly carmelized limbs on the Big Five I was about to order. I shipped the Bocote to Craig, with instructions to use it to make a take-down Big Five.

And here it is. 66 inches nock to nock, 75 pounds at 28 inches, and beautiful to behold.

Naturally, the first thing I had to do was personalize it, so I made a new string, triple served for bare-fingered shooting.

Then I removed all the leather and replaced it with a laced grip and matching leather on the rest. This is the same leather I put on my Sunset Hill. The two bows now match like two peas in a pod.

What's that you ask?

Does it shoot 750-grain elk killing ash arrows well?

Like a dream!

Shinken

That is a very *handsome* Big 5 Rik!

  :jumper:    :jumper:    :jumper:

Enjoy!

I look forward to seeing it leaning against a big 6 x 6!

Shoot straight, Shinken

Now we wait these next few months for those photo's of your good self beside a downed elk ... or perhaps a few grouse .

Beautiful Bow Rik.

Man I want a Hill so bad I can taste it.  I've wanted one for a long time now too.  Maybe I should sell some of my stuff that doesn't get used and get one.

Oh yeah...broke. I knew there was some catch. lol

Do they MAKE them in "weenie weights" for us old "has beens?"

My days of 75-90lb bows ran off with my third ex wife......now about 52lbs I could think of letting it move in with me.

Someone open up a trad shop in N IN so I can see some of this stuff first hand, for crying out loud. Im running out of years to shoot all these bows!

God Bless (ya buncha animals)

SlowBowke...
I haven't shot anything over 60# in years ... now content to use my 50-52# Hill bows for everything from Clout, Field, Fita target to the important stuff like rabbits, Goats, pigs, Fallow and Sambar deer ...

So us "old has been weenie weighters" can use bows of such poundage in confidence for years to come when I get old , grey and probably a bit podgy round the middle...
Umm...
Thats right I am grey, round in the middle and balding ...

There isn't an animal I wouldn't hunt here in Oz , aside from water buffalo, with my 50# Hills.
