Arrow cresting -dipping help
«
on:

I'm working on my first set of cedar arrows. I crested with Testers paint. Now when I dip them in Boning Fletch-lac, the cresting runs badly. Is Boning Fletch-lac only compatible with their own paint? Is there any other lacquer finish I can use on these so I don't have to use them for kindling?
Thanks for any help. Steve

You might want to try Minwax wipe on poly. I'm not sure it will work any better, but I like to use it because wiping it on with a rag is easier than dipping, IMHO. Plus, you can probably buy a small can of it at a hardware store and give it a try without investing too much time and money.

Steve, get some water base clear coat and crest over your cresting only and then use your fletch tite cement for the fletching. Or dip the entire crown and cresting in the water base clear coat, but then you need to use Duco cement. I clear coat my crowns and crestings with Minwax Polycrylic, goes on milky but then dries clear. The solvents in Fletch-Lac eats away at your crestings as you have found out. Hope that helps, Steve.

After I Misax coat the cresting, then can I dip the entire shaft in the Fletch-lac? Or will it eat the Minwax too?

Another vote for polycrilic.
It partners up good with surewood shafts.

To answer your first question, Bohning paints do not play with other materials except you can use Polycrylic over the Bohning Laq. I dip and crest with Bohning Laq. then set overnite. Then I lightly brush on the Polycrylic. Let it set overnite and use Saunders NPV glue to fletch.

Thanks for your help guys. Just scored a can of Polycrylic and put on the first coat with no issues. Live and learn...I guess. With the help of a few friends. Should be flinging these bad boys by the weekend.

To the root of your question.....lacquer (anybody's) will eat up just about any finish except lacquer. Just about anything will go over lacquer, just about nothing but lacquer will go under lacquer. Any time you want to use two different kinds of finish, one over the other, you need to check the compatibility on a piece of scrap.

Water based poly won't run with Testers paint, makes a hard finish and doesn't smell.

I use a couple dips in Polycrylic, let that dry for 24 hours minumum and then dip with several coats of gasket lacquer.

I think any finish with a solvent as a carrier will cause the Testers to run. Water based poly won't.
