I am from NJ my family still there  Southern area near Delaware river bridge to Delaware  we have and had STATE REG wild hog hunts in NJ  last few years,One farmer admitted he let 12 hogs out his farm 6-7 years ago to have a future wild hog hunt around his farm but they followed NJ turnpike wood strips for 20 more miles in 6 years,I believe most northern States this is what happing now.

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate them all.

Rob, I've read the Q&A's you posted, thank you.

We've gone from the DEC saying to shoot them on site, to leave them alone, and let us trap them. I thought it was a little far fetched for the DEC to think they could trap every hog that makes It's way into the state, but I can understand what some of you have said about having a season on them, and people relocating them for what they think is their benefit. I'm sure it enters into it. I've seen a couple beautiful trout ponds ruined because somebody thought it would be nice to have bass in them too.

Thanks for the pics too. I haven't seen any hog sign in my area, but that proves to me that they aren't too far off. Or have been, at least.

Sticksnstones, the picture, and your personal observations, make me feel a little better about what I've read about hogs destroying turkey populations, and the damage they can do to other critters.

I don't have any food plots, but I can imagine the disgust at working your butt off on something like that, only to have hogs come in a destroy it overnight. Not to mention what's been said about the damage they can do to agricultural crops.

All in all, from what most of you have said, it reconfirms my thinking that I don't want them here. It doesn't sound like they're going to show up in huntable numbers any time soon, if they do. If and when it does happen, I don't see where I'd have any choice but to start hunting some wild pork.

Thanks again.

I agree, hogs are great fun to hunt--when on somebody else's land. However, hunting them does not control the population. The ONLY method of eradication is whole-sounder removal. Hunting educates them, makes them nocturnal, and makes them move out of the area temporarily, but it does nothing to control their numbers.

I don't understand the seeming protection the NY DEC is giving to feral hogs. Must other places the rule is KAP (kill all pigs) anyway, anyhow with whatever you have in your hands.

Wud--they're strategy is actually the best way to eradicate. Killing them by any other means than whole sounder removal just educates the rest and makes them harder to kill. Hunting or half-arsed trapping will never get rid of them.

I'm with most others. They're very fun to hunt but if I owned the land they wouldn't be very fun to have around. I'm sure they disrupt micro habitats but like said, plenty of pigs, deer, turkey and everything else co-exist in this neck of the woods.

All that said, I predict on 1 September 2015 theres going to be an explosion of wild pigs in NY as numerous hunting pens comply with the DEC's law forbidding them and it will be easier (and economical from the lease owners perspective) to just open the gates.

You know, I hadn't thought of that, but you're probably right. I wouldn't be surprised if we do hear about more hogs running around NY after September 1st.

Cav, you are probably right. Their only other option would be to shoot them and that costs money.  It would be like asking a farmer to use his gas, equipment and labor to mow his own crops down a month before harvest.

I never thought of them actually releasing them to spite the DEC.
