DOes it matter where point weight comes from?

There is a slight difference, but I don't know anybody that could tell the difference, and I know a few very good shooters!

In that case no. I however notice a difference when you go with a light insert and heavy point vs heavy insert and light point. Seems the heavy point really puts the weight out ahead. But the heavy insert tends to be longer there by acting as a internal foot also pushing weight back.

One possible difference to consider is that a heavier head tends to have thicker steel, which resists tip curling better than a lighter head with a heavy insert might.

I've messed with those two combinations in the past as well, there was no difference in tuning or flight. I did prefer the weight more in the insert as that opened up may more broadheads available in the lighter weights.

I can't tell any difference. I shoot 165gr points with 11gr inserts and 125gr points and 50gr inserts. I like the smaller 125gr for hogs and the larger 165gr for deer... The bare shaft tuning results are identical for me.

I try to go with the cheap free insert that comes with the shaft and use a heavier head.

I also think there is a small difference. It really shows up when you get into extremes.

If you have 225 gr up front - one with a 100gr insert and 125 point and the other with 11gr insert and 200+ point, the heavier point seems to act weaker for me because all of the weight is at the very front, whereas the 100gr insert is fairly long with the weight centered back in the shaft farther.

I can see the difference in arrow flight at 20 yards - not a lot, but the heavier point does fly left (I shoot left handed) from the light point/heavy insert by a couple of inches.

Move the combinations a bit closer to each other - like the difference between 11gr insert and 50gr insert and I see no difference.

My form isn't all that great. And I could not shoot one, or even two of each and prove anything.

What I am saying is that if I shoot half a dozen or more of each, the GROUP with the weight farther up front will be slightly weak compared to the GROUP of the others.

I think the only situation where it may make a slight difference is if you were borderline too stiff on your spine. The 50 grain inserts would do better because the 100 grain inserts are longer and will stiffen the spine up a tad bit....

But really.... we are splitting hairs here. i doubt it really makes much difference in most cases.

When bare shaft tuning, I tried the long, 50 grain inserts from GoldTip.  I found that hey did not have the same flight as a standard insert with 2x40 grain weights added to the back of the shaft.
I suspect that the long insert was causing the shaft to act as if it was 2" shorter.
