There is some sort of "open period" I think for private land only..tags can be bought OTC,

When is that ?

Chuck,
the southern half of the state is designated as area ZZ and is private land only and runs for two weeks.  It should be the same start date of April 20th (turkey seasons open on Monday). Our first two northern seasons are one week only each. Michigan DNR website has a turkey guide and details.  I believe you can even order licenses on-line there for non-residents.

I drew the second season.  Hoping to kill my first bird on my own property.

Ah, I am speaking of that guaranteed (no quota) licence hunt ( most of May ).  Hunting up near Escanaba (UP). .  is May too late for gobbling birds ?

ChuckC, the UP is included in the state-wide 0234 May 4-31 season. OTC tag, gotta have a base license ($151+$15 for the kill tag, NR). I always opt for this hunt and yes, they'll still be gobbling. At least where I hunt in southern Oceana county, not sure about the UP. Looking forward to getting back out there.

Beginning of May is still good for Northern Lower so you should be good early on up in UP too.  Lot's of birds in Crystal Falls area last fall. Of course we'll see how they make it through the winter.  I bagged a fall gobbler on our annual Shrewhaven Hunt last year.  More turkeys around than deer.

Drew the 1st week also but I have a new bird dog coming the week before, so don't know how much hunting I'll get in.

I'm good for the first 2 week season in the lower, looking forward to this hunt

Man what a bummer having to draw a turkey tag.

Thankfully I have access to private land in area ZZ which is over the counter.  Been shooting in basement everyday... gonna try and get first one with longbow this year.

I'm going for the otc 237 hunt again this year, got a nice bunch of toms hanging around the bird feeders again this winter... my wife has named them the "long beard gang", hope to make my first kill with my Northern Mist Baraga this spring.
Too many bows to list, and so many more I want to try!  Keep the wind in your face, and your broadheads sharp.

I drew first season in ZB, hopefully we get some type of thaw soon! Usually don't have a problem getting on birds, just have problems hitting them!
All we have to decide is what to do with the time given to us.
